I had gotten it when I was a kid and had an old man tell me to put lava soap on it and let it dry over night and it would be gone. I did it and it worked, there was still alittle there, but for the most part it was gone. I haven't had it since then, so I haven't had to try it again. Good luck....

Wally- unfortunately, once you show symptoms it's too late to do much. The rash caused by poison ivy is an allergic reaction to the oil which got on your skin when you touched the plant, or otherwise got the oil from the plant on you. It's like a delayed reaction to a chemical burn for the lack of a better description. The best thing to do from now on is to take a shower as soon as you get in from an area which may have had poison ivy. If you wash the oil off soon enough you won't have the reaction. Once you see the rash appearing and feel that telltale itch, the damage has been done. Also, the rash from poison ivy doesn't spread, nor is it contagious. If you have any residual oil on you or your clothes however, you can spread it to other parts of your body, or other people. If you can get some prednisone tablets or cortisone cream they will help with the itch, but time really is the only cure. In the future, if you can find some jewelweed (touch-me-not), which usually grows near poison ivy, and rub it on yourself as soon as you contact poison ivy then it will neutralize the ivy. I've done the same thing by rubbing plantain on stinging nettle when I got into it, and both of them work. Good luck and you have my sympathy.

Go to the doctor and get a steriod shot. It will help it go away a lot faster. Also, you can get some ointment from wal-mart that will stop the itching. I can't remember the name, but it is some good stuff.
Also the doctor should be able to give you some medication to stop the oozing of the infections.
Good luck and wear longsleaves next time.
I hate poison ivy and but it sure likes me.
I'm starting to itch, just thinking about it!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have the same problem Wally and the best thing I found is Pepermint Soap, if you think you have been exposed to Poison Ivy just take a cold shower with this soap and it seems to help me keep from getting it. Very important to take the shower ASAP or it won't work.
Soap is available @ General Nutrition Center store in the malls.
Good Luck!

Cheese grater and rubbing alcohol. Hurts like a b***h, but it's better than the itch.
Last year I got some on both legs, so I did a little experiment. One leg I scratched whenever I felt like it, the other I didn't touch. The poison ivy lasted the same amount of time on each leg, so I figured you might as well scratch it if it itches.
I've heard if you let a goat eat the ivy, then drink milk from the goat you can develop immunity. I'll let someone else try it, though.

Here's what I've done in the past:
water and bleach mixture 1/2 & 1/2- helps dry out the infected area real quick.
Aveeno oatmeal bath and cream- very good stuff to help with the itch.
when you bath, scratch the mess out of it with a hand scrubber of some sort, then when you get out put 90% alcohol on it. Let the alcohol dry completely then use some aveeno cream to help with itch and dry it out. When you get home from work mix you up some Bleach Water and apply with a cotton ball on infected areas except around your eyes. If you got it on your face go to the Dr.'s office and get steriods (shot or pills, The pills work faster, IMO)
In the future, just keep an eye out for it. Once I knew for sure what the plant looked like and study many pics of it, I am more aware of it now and this has helped me from getting it.

After exposure, TekNu works wonders. I removes the urishinol oil from your skin, before it binds to the proteins and causes the allergic reaction that are the symptoms. I've hunted in thick poison oak, and afterwards what we'd do is
- strip to our shorts (no comments needed)
- smear ourselves down with TekNu, whole body. It's like a lotion consistency, they say not to use water to dilute it.
- wipe down with paper towels, and put in a black garbage bag as contaminated waste.
- do a second application around your eyes, face and any areas that were exposed to the plant.
- take all clothes, and put into a second black garbage bag, change completely including boots. At home I'd soak the camo in TekNu and some Cabelas camo laundry detergent in a slop bucket for an hour, stirring with an old baseball bad. Drain it with a hose, then wash in the clothes washer, add TekNu to the machine.
If you need, they make a pre-exposure product to put a coating on your skin to prevent contact, I found that it smelled, and I really didn't need it.
The stuff works.
