    price on a used vehicle?

Hey guys, I have looked at a lot of used f150's lately and one thing that continues to throw me off is the pricing. I was at the ford dealer in Katy the other day and they offerred me 9,000 of MSRP to start and would look into what other rebates etc they had. Now the MSRP on that truck I wanted was 49,000-9,000 in automatic deductions = 40,000.

I looked at a used 2011 F150 (same options) with 15,000 miles and they are asking 37,000. Do you see some good haggle room with a used vehicle or is the price going to be what it is? It seemed like a very low drop in value even though it is used and 2 years old. I have never had to buy a vehicle on my own and I am buying one here in the next year hopefully. I just want to understand the pricing differences and what would be the better deal.

With so much in rebates, it's worth a couple of thousand to get new.

That's what I was thinking but I was also leaning towards used if I found the right price. When I go to buy my truck ill have about 15,000 to put down. Maybe even 18,000.

If you'll have that much cash to pay down, why don't you find and old man that has a low miler sitting in the garage and pay cash? A dealer will take that same used truck and add several thousand to the price just because they can.
BUT...you won't get that oh so awesome feeling of smoke being blown up your britches leg by a dealer.

Your interest would be better on a new also.

I have never owned a new vehicle for that reason. Any money person will tell you buying a brand new vehicle is throwing money away. I find a vehicle with 30,000 miles or less and have never had an issue. It will save you about 10-20K. jmho

Didnt say I wouldnt like to have one though But for me its just not feasible.

If you can get a brand new one at $40k, then I SURE would not pay $37k for a used one

In this case I think you should look around for a better deal on a used one. They can give all the rebates they want at the dealership for a new one and it is still going to be overpriced, so the fact that a 2yr old truck was so close in price to an overpriced new one tells me that the used one you were looking at was well overpriced as well. To answer your question you will not have near as much negotiation room on a used vehicle compared to a new vehicle.

The thing is I have researched the same vehicle and it is consistently right at 35-37,000 depending on the mileage. 10-30,000 miles.

you are either not searching the right places for used vehicles or you should take the deal on the new one. Typically you can get a 2yr old vehicle with less than 30,000 miles on it for more than 3k-5k less than a new one is going to cost you IF it has not had aftermarket stuff done to it

that is much more along the lines of the type of savings you will typically see when buying slightly used as compared to new

Broaden your search because those prices are too high on a two year old F150. If you will I almost 20k to put down I would go with a slightly older model and save the interest. If you are trying to build credit than pay 15k down and finance 5k. Still saves you more money. New vehicles are nice but they are generally a bad investment because they lose so much value so quickly

Look up the trade in value of what you are trying to buy used on KBB and NADA (close to what the dealer paid for the vehicle), and offer $1,000 - $1,500 more.

Most of those prices came from dealers. Ill have to look some more. But the truck I want is a decked out FX4 and has an MSRP of 49,000. So idk how the used value is calculated from that.

I've been seriously shopping for a new truck the last month or so. What I've found is that the manufacturers need to move inventory so badly that they are giving huge rebates and 0 or close to 0 percent financing to move new ones. The effect of this is precisely what you are seeing. New trucks can be had for only a few thousand more than 2-3 year old ones. At that price difference, it's hard to buy the used one.

That said, I think truck prices generally are higher than they were several years ago. Looking at older used, the 5-6 year old stuff, it's priced higher than I would have expected and than what I saw last I shopped 3 years ago. The only exception to this is Fords with the 6.0 Powerstroke, which we've had a couple of threads on recently.
