    What's Good for a 17 Yr Old?

My 17 yr old son wrecked is vehicle a month or so ago and totaled it. I asked him last night what he would prefer. He really don't know what he wants.
He needs something dependable, good on gas, something with some room, and since we live out in the country, nothing that's low to the ground. He had a Mazda Suv (don't know what model) that was handed down from his sister. Time to get him back on the road in his own vehicle. My brother suggested a Toyota 4 runner. Me, I just don't know. I've been so busy at work, I just haven't had time to look around.
So I'm asking the GS for help in finding a vehicle. What vehicles are problems? What's your kids driving?

Older Jeep Grand Cherokee would be good...Alot of them are still on the road and parts are easy to get and its something that you don't need a degree from MIT to work on, but I don't know how good of gas mileage it would get. Older 4 runners I don't remember being great on gas mileage either but another good realiable choice.

Since he wrecked the first one, I would say the second is a bicycle.

I would go with a Toyota or Nissan truck with the extra cab.

I had a Toyota Tacoma when I was his age. It got great gas mileage and was dependable. I loved that little truck and wish I would of never sold it.

Depends on how much he could afford.

I didn't say one word about parenting. A bike is and excellent mode of transportation.

Both of mine have std. trans. Nissan Frontiers. No issues for about 7 years now. Other than my daughter wrecking hers twice.

Originally had a 1987 Ford Bronco, had some wild times in it, but it was hell for gas mileage. Then I got a 2001 Toyota Tundra Extended Cab. Got great mileage with it and the only problem I ever had with it was the starter went out once. My brother drove it after me and we'd still have it, but he totaled it when a lady pulled in front of him. Had right at 300,000 miles on it when it was totaled. I have a 2006 Toyota Tundra crew cab now with 160,000+ miles. I think I'll stick with the Toyotas

The jeep idea will cost you big time in repairs... Toyota all the way.

As Shane said, it all comes down to how much someone is going to spend.

Any small 2wd truck or SUV should work well. A standard trans would boost mileage. My roommate has an 01 Nissan frontier and can get upwards of 25 on the highway.
