Problems with my Boy's Savage Model 64 .22lr's

I picked up a couple Savage 22's for my boys to shoot. Headed out to the lease last weekend but didnt have good luck with either of the 2 we bought. I know the are cheap guns but the boys paid with their own money so I was proud, and they were too.

One would FTF every few rounds. There would be a mark on the back of the shell from the firing pin, but it didnt fire. I could reload that same shell into the magazine or chamber and it would fire. It seemed to get a little better after some shooting but not great.

The second one worked fine out of the box but after a couple hundre rounds it wouldnt feed a new shell from the mag. The top of the mag is pretty chewed up. We stuck in the mag from the other one and it worked fine.

I have been doing some reading and it looks like that is a common problem.

    Anyone have or seen this?

i'm guessing a weak firing pin spring and/or the extractors were slightly bent thus causing extraction/feed problems

the Savage 64 is the imported version of the Annie 64

i would take the bolt out and clean it real good with varsol or acetone. From yrs of use, i bet there is crud, oil, lint, and powder debris in the bolt.

blow it out with an air compressor , then see if it fires more consistently

do you remember which round from the magazine is having loading problems ? does the 1st rd normally feed fine, and the last rd. not feed properly ? this could possibly be due to a magazine spring being to weak. rounds 1, 2, 3 will feed perfectly. Rounds 4-5 will jam due to weak spring

swap magazines between guns to rule out problems

edit .... after further research, just realized the Savage 64 is an autoloader .... disregard above

i would definitely clean the action and internals as best i could , including the firing pin spring and extractors . Autos are notorious for aquiring oily crud from constant shooting

I will give them a good cleaning.

They are brand new out of the box. One we picked up on Friday, on the way there. The other I had for about a week but never took it out of the box.

Brand new guns should *almost* always be taken down and cleaned before use. The stuff they pack it in needs to be cleaned out.

What .22 rounds were you using (brand, etc.?) Autos can be very finicky when it comes to the ammo. I've never had problems with any of my .22 autos using CCI, but have had issues with misfires etc with some of the cheaper remington bulk, winchester, etc.

We were just shooting some winchester and remington bulk like you said. I had heard auto pistols being finicky but hadnt heard that rifles were.

Sounds like I need to give them a good cleaning and then another try.

Thats what I was thinking. Any idea if they reinburse for shipping to them? Ticks me off to pay more to ship back a brand new rifle.

Reviews and feedback state the bolt hammers the magazine and wrecks it. Looks like you will need to purchase magazines by the case.
