For thoes of you using braid. You don't have to use a mono backing. Wrap two wraps of electrical tape around the spool and the braid will no longer slip.

I have a cousin who is in the fishing tackle industry and he told me last year that every single reel is made by the same Chinese company with only 2 exceptions. Obviously to each companies own specs but all reels Abu Garcia to Zebco made at same plant. The only 2 exceptions are Shimano and the higher end Penn. That is second hand knowledge so take it for what it's worth.

Saying all that for a very good inexpensive reel I bought a couple Cabelas Salt Striker several years ago for the kids when they were younger and they held up very well and we still use them a lot.

I think I'm going to get my wife a Stradic ci4 3000 and get the kids a Sedona 2500. What PowerPro are y'all using or would you suggest - 20# Slick8?

Take a look at the Shimano Sedona series. They're made for saltwater, as long as they're cleaned out and rinsed off afterwards....should work for you. I've got three of these and use for wade/kayak fishing.

Thanks for jogging my memory Ricky T - I should have said Sahara rather than Sedona. Both Shimano but I really like my three Saharas.

Any Penn reel gets my vote. Never had a single problem with one and I service my own reels. Stainless steel innards is the only way to go. Shakespeare makes a good one too. Pawn shops are awesome for reel buying

I like 20# then usually use a 15# fluorocarbon leader. If i am using a popping cork i use enough leader so i can attach my cork to the leader, the braid cuts right through some corks. Or with the braid you can also put a half hitch around each end of the cork pin to keep it in place.

Penn and shimano are both awesome reel's. Another good choice is a super caster by US reels

I have a wright&mcgill skeet Reese signature series spinner that works awesome. Think it was about $100. Can't go wrong with the upper end shimano's either. I don't have any if their spinners but live my chronarchs!

I don't like Power Pro. I use FINS Windtamer High Vis Pink 30lbs braid. Power Pro has too much starch in it and takes longer to break in. Windtamer cast like a dream the first cast.
