    Bobcat started it all!

About four and a half years ago, a friend introduced me to the sport of bowhunting. Before I picked up a bow, I had been a rifle hunter for more than 20 years. One day, my friend handed me an old 'Parker Wildfire' starter bow and told me to start practicing because I was invited on an upcoming hunting trip. About a month later, I took to the wilderness in search of feral hog with my bow in hand.

On the second day of our hunt, I found myself alone in a West Texas mesquite thicket. I had spotted a descent sized boar and I was putting a stalk on him. As I was closing the distance, something prompted me to turn my head; call it primal instincts or a sixth sense but I got the feeling I was being watched.

As I turned to scan the area, I immediately made eye contact with with a bobcat lying under a small cedar. Everything happened so fast but he gave me an opportunity to range him and draw my bow. At 32 yards, I let an arrow fly without even thinking about it. To my surprise, the bobcat sprang up about 7 feet in the air and bolted out of the area. My heart was pumping! I gave it about five minutes and then went to track him. I recovered my first bow kill about 20 yards away from where I made the shot! I couldn't believe it!

That hunting trip changed my life....

Since harvesting that bobcat, I have taken up bowhunting as a serious hobby and way of life. I've had the privilege of hunting with some rather experienced bowhunters and have taken over 20 trophies with my upgraded equipment. But most of all, I have found a new pastime to share with my friends and family and now TBH!

I am fairly new to the TBH community and just wanted to share this experience with all of you. Feel free to post your own story about how you were introduced to this great sport.

Great story. It does make the hair stand up on your neck when that feeling of being watched happens. Like coyotes howling around you as you walk alone in the dark from your stand to the cabin.

Fantastic story and welcomr to the brotherhood!
I grew up watching my father shooting a bow every now and than. I shot mostly in our basements (grew up in Kansas City) during the winter. My first true bow hunt was in East Texas 40 years ago. I had a Wing recurve and three arrows, and sat on a wooden folding camp chair under a cedar tree. I heard deer walking and watched three doe walk by at 25 yards and was hooked!
My first kill was a very young button buck that I shot at 40 yards while he was walking down a fence line. No range finder, no sights, just pull her back and let it fly. Today, I would never take that shot.
I have been blessed and hunted everywhere from Canada to South Texas to South Africa. I have many hunts on my bucket list and hope I am still hunting while i am in my 80's........ heck, maybe even my 90's!

Great story, TEX! It is amazing how that first time you connect with a bow changes everything.

I bought my first bow with my own money when I was 13. I got my first kill at a deer hunt on the Callahan Ranch in '84 I think. My uncle won the hunt at the Texas Shootout and could take 3 additional hunters.
Killed a javelina, spot and stalk while the others watched. Been hooked ever since

I need to go to my parents house and round up a bunch of pictures and have them scanned.
