    Fly Fishing Newbie Questions

I am looking at taking my wife (the fishing addict) up to Broken Bow this June for her birthday. I was planning on either a charter in the lake, or a guided trout fishing trip in the river.

Neither of us have ever been fly fishing before, so I was wondering if anyone had any pointers from going up there in the past?

From what I have read, the guides will provide everything but the poles. Would these work for us (Cabelas Link) I'm not looking to spend hundreds of dollars on something we may never do again...

Would it be better to just get the charter on the lake for a day and then take some spin rods to the river? I have caught trout in New Mexico like this before...

For lodging, I was thinking of either a cabin or the big hotel up there. Just the 2 of us... Thoughts?

Any and all help would be appreciated!

i fly fish some down in south Texas for reds it can be fun if the wind stays down biggest pointer knock your barbs down so when you hock yourself in the neck or head or ear they come out easy. And dont cast with your wrist its all in the arm.

My wife and I went there a couple of times when we lived in Dallas. We just took some spin rods and used spinners and caught quite a few trout. Don't know about fly fishing guides, though. For lodging, we just pitched a tent in one of the sites by the river. We also rented some kayaks and enjoyed using those on the river. Not any rapids or anything, just a nice leisurely float Really cheap and fun trip.

I would encourage you to try fly fishing. It's a blast. I think orvis has a beginning fly fishing book that's a good start. If there is a fly shop close to you some casting instruction up front goes a long way. It's a great sport for couples and I have my girlfriend doing it now. Ill post up a pick of her last catch. It was trip #2. Also, if you get a 5-6 weight to learn on its a blast to catch bass and perch on a fly. And, schoolie trout at the coast are a ball on a fly if you do that. Lots of options.

San Juan river in New Mexico. It's a different type fishing but fantastic in the winter and early spring.

Fly fished at beavers bend and its a blast. You can goto many different streams and get in the water or bank fish and will have plenty of fish to try for. I would suggest googling for a fly fishing club near you. I know the one local to me in longview/Tyler area has. Workshops and helpful folks. Good luck.

Remember that it's not a whip. There should be minimal wrist movement as you cast. Since the weight is in the line and not the hook like a bait caster, you can practice casting in a grassy field (with no fly attached). It's a great way to learn. It's also a good idea to wear sunglasses and a brimmed hat as you learn to cast safely.

Definitely get some practice in before you go and once you get the technique down actually practice on flowing water. Getting a drag free presentation on moving water can be difficult at times.
