Just finished The Heroes and previously read best Served Cold. Both were awesome. Brutal, gritty, yet expertly crafted characters that drive the story more than the plot. The story of Caul Shivers is one of the best character developments I've read.

The books are generally about mercenaries in medieval times, but they aren't anything close to fantasy. This is straight up battle, deception, traitors, and bloodshed. Check it out.

I read Best Served Cold first, and I think I liked it better b/c I didn't know what to expect. The Heroes is a less complex story, but it is totally awesome b/c it's a 3 day battle over 540 pages.

The Heroes takes place after Best Served Cold. I would read Best Served Cold first. Or read the first book in the trilogy series he wrote.
