    Hey Jeep guys....

I've never had a Jeep. What can you tell me about this one?

    2001 Wrangler Sport
    125,000 miles
    5 speed
Dana 44 rear and 30 front
3" lift, brand new looking 33" tires
couple other options, front bull bar and custom fenders, etc.

Asking price is $10,000, could go lower. Obviously I'd get it checked out before I did anything but does this sound like a good buy? I wouldn't drive it very much, really, would probably turn it over to my stepson in a year and a half.

Sold a 2000 TJ with 4.0L, 5 speed last Sept. for $8,500. Had 121K miles, new soft top, freshly replaced clutch, flywheel, and all parts involved, 2.5" coil spacers, spray in liner in the tub, brand new-never used Warn 8000i winch in cradle system, full replacement bumper with 2" receiver. Oh, also had faily new BFG AT/TA 31" x 10.5" tires.

I would check on Craigslist and the auto sites to get a feel for pricing.

Also, those Dana gear boxes should be stock.

With tires alone and lift, I would say little high, but fair price. You can always see what he/she will take.

Notorious issues with these: oil leaks around the valve cover, oil leak in the rear main seal, throw out bearing and/or clutch will go in about this milage if it has not already been replaced (especially with the oversized tire stress). If you buy it or have a chance to look into it before, just check all your fluids and see their condition to get a feel with what your would be dealing with.

Price sounds high. I sold a TJ Rubiclone (front and rear 44's, 33" tires, air lockers, rubicon transfer case, 4 inch rubicon express lift, and a ton of other goodies) in excellent condition with only 50k miles for 9000, and that was tough to get. Jeeps do hold their value well, but not that well.

I have had a few TJ's - Rubicon and Unlimited. Seems like an average price on them these days. If you like it, get it checked out and go for it! I personally wouldn't pay that much for a TJ with that many miles, but at the same time I sold a 1980 CJ-7 for more than that last year.

That one is decent rigging -
Straight 6 = best engine they used.
Dana 44 rear = solid rear axle - same as in the Rubicon

I would assume stock gears, with the standard it won't be a big deal especially if you aren't using it as a daily driver.

That will be a solid Jeep for years to come.

Last year of the TJ was 2006.

                        Tj's are solid. I'm on my 5th.

I bought my first jeep waaaaaaaay back when I was in High School....had one from then till 3 years ago when I bought a mule..[Kawasaki} ...they are loads of fun till they break...then the expense starts ...nothing on a jeep is inexpensive...old jeeps are worse...but nothing is cheap..and the rag tops leak air and warer..when it rains...the short wheelbase gives a choppy ride...and there is very limited space for dogs and gear...especially if you take someone with you...I eventually bought a lowboy trailer to haul mine on and just used it hunting and off road..

8500 still seems high for the mileage. I'd try to talk him down to 7. The inline 6 is a GREAT motor though.
TJs are great reliable vehicles, but Jeep really does stand for Just Empty Every Pocket. Even if you say you won't, youll end up spending more than you imagined on upgrades because its so fun.
