U-Verse is your best bet and fastest way to get outside ...I&R will be harder since all the guys in U-Verse are trying to move up to those spots and same with splicing. Keep in mind U-Verse Techs are on a different newer contract so pay is not as high as I&R or Splicers they are in the old contract. But with your 8yrs you will go in at top pay or 6 mo short of top pay.

I have worked in the I&R side of the house for the past 16 years. It's definitely changed from when it was Southwestern Bell when I started. I do it all installs and repairs of all pots lines,ATM DSL,& Uverse also cable splicing. I started off in Waco for 8 years but now am in Temple. I was working the Rockdale,Cameron,Batlett area until it went back to Austin. We just got 4 prem techs in our yard. This may sound crazy jctex81 but if your inside and want an outside job like mine I've seen several guys from the inside get surplussed and have taken i&r jobs away from people with regular transfers due to surpluss employee having priority. We lost 2 i&r openings to inside surpluss transfers. Other than that prem tech is about the only way your going to get outside.

I retired from SW Bell / AT&T in 2001 after 32 years. SW Bell / AT&T certainly isn't the best company in the world but by no means are they the worst. The work, at least for me, was interesting and challenging and the pay and benefits were above average. Like any big company they have their good points and their bad points, but for me the good points far outweighed their bad ones. Check em out
