From what I've heard and seen, at least around here in East Texas is AT&T is so backed up on splicing (copper AND fiber), it won't be long before they start contracting that out along with all the install (trenching/boring) that is pretty much already all contracted out. Good company to work for though if you want to make good money for what you're doing. AT&T is where I'll be headed were something major to ever happen to the company I work for now.

Ive been in Tyler for 15 of my 17yrs with the company and yes we have lots of work, you can pretty much write your own check. We no longer place our own cable, its all done by contractors. I was in the line crew for 3yrs and I think im the last person left in east Texas that was In the line crew but other than small lineman repair jobs it all goes to contractors. All the lineman have retired and there was job vacancies til the work had to go to contractors. As far as splicing and installation and repair thats all done in house and per our contract cant be contracted out.

You will have to go thru first aid & safety also pole climbing and ladders. After that you will go to school on whatever job you get. The schools are useless the best training is in the field with other techs.

In order to work as a CST you would have to take a TMT test. If you pass and are offered a job then you go to pole climbing
