    drop camps for elk hunting

Does anyone have any suggestions for spike camp or drop camps for elk hunters. I have a group of guys who are wanting to do a DIY elk hunt but would like to be in the areas with elk. I have been before and spent 10 days bird watching and walking for miles. The elk were much higher.

I would like to go again, would prefer bow but would consider rifle hunting. I would like to try one of those hunts where the outfitter packs you in and then picks you up several days later. Any suggestions?

Check with Jon Sund in Gunnison Colorado with Eagle MTN outfitters: sundjon@yahoo.com
        (970) 260-5035

He has 9 spike camps that he will get you there via horse back.

          Have you hunted with him?

These type of hunts are fun. I would reccommend keeping the horses in camp. The odds of elk being within walking distance every day is unlikely. With horses available you can cover a lot more area to find elk. You need to be as mobile as they are.

Did a drop camp hunt with these guys. We went first rifle and killed a cow and a 5x5 out of 4 of us.

And be very very careful. I know I hiked right past (and drove once) past these drop camps. I was thinking wow, I'd be p oed if I paid 1-3k and people walked/drove right by (like me).

Fact is, it's very hard to find good places to get away from other hunters.

no doubt! I'd be fuming. I would assume that a drop cant would you away from vehicles and walk in hunters.

If you are looking for cush accomodations Drop camps are hard to beat but I agree with Old Killer. If you Booger the Elk close by you may have to travel far to find them again. If you are not experienced with horses I would think twice before you try to handle horses for an extended period. Dealing with horses can go south real fast. That means you'll have to pay a wrangler to stay with you in camp.

I suggest you attack this from a different angle. Find the best CO OTC or 0 point unit you can and then find the best outfitter in there. Call them and discuss what your expectations are and then call as many references as you can.

I'll PM you a unit I think would be a good choice and the reasons why.

Too many Colorado redneck are trying to be guides now. Who knows what sort of jack wad wiltake you to a "super' drop camp.

                          Good luck.

Try to look in units that have a peak elevation of 8-10k that way u don't have to worry about them being too high
Last season we hunted an area where lowest elevation was 7k and tops were 8500 we had the advantage of starting out near the top anyhow
