Caribou Hunting- Will we still be able to hunt them in the future?

Saw on another thread mention of declining Caribou numbers. I have not heard about this, and admittedly have done zero research about it. The other thread mentioned that the government was conducting counts on various herds and cutting the number of animals we would be allowed to take?
I was planning on going to Alaska in 2015. My question is- should a person go before then, or will we still be able to hunt them at that time? Will be in Africa this fall so it would be hard to go this year, but i dont want to "miss the boat" on them.
Any factual info would be appreciated!

I have been following along as well. Some herds seem stable and others not so much. Sounds like the outfitters think the numbers are fine but hard to weed through it all. I would consider talking with Mark Buehrer at Bowhunting Safari consultants. He keeps tabs on it and is a good resource. He is really helpful in recommending the best outfitters if you go that route.

Just curious where you shot the animal in your avitar.

They can't stop giving out tags for Caribou completely. Maybe cutback in certain areas, but not halt hunting everywhere, all at once. Just my .02.

We went on one of the very last Labrador Caribou hunts that will be offered for a while. We actually found out that Labrador was suspending ALL Caribou hunting in '10 indefinitely the day we were supposed to pick up our tags opening day for the Labrador season. Our outfitter was pretty exasperated and got on the phone with the head of fish and wildlife for Labrador. By the end of the day, fish and game had a greed to allow all hunts that were booked and paid for prior to opening day to proceed. They did go ahead and close the season for all residents. As of last year, our outfitter had not heard any good news about a season being opened back up any time soon. This only applies to the Labrador Woodland Caribou that I know of. I don't know anything about the other herds. It's a bad deal and I really hope that they can make a recovery.

Not all herds are declining. Some are doing well. Research the different herds and book with an outfitter that hunts in areas with a healthy herd.

Avitar pic is an ibex from new mexico. That was an archery kill. I did kill one this year with a rifle that was bigger but way more proud of the archery one. If you want to see them all look at my thread the greatest hunting year ever.

The limit in some units in Alaska is 5 per hunter. So I think we are good here for awhile

A couple years ago they reduced the limit of some herds from 2 to 1. Oneforthewall was already booked and planned on two tags but before they left they found out they got one tag

Agreed but more are declining than doing well. That said I believe some of the issue comes with the way the gov counts them and that causes the numbers discrepancy.
I do know this, if they want to help the Labrador herd they need to stop the commercial killing of them, limit the "indians/ inuits" to the amount they are allowed to take and stop shooting them in there wintering grounds.
All 3 are detrimental to the health of the herds. I was asked to go on the winter hunt and you just run them on a snow machine till they bunch up they climb off and go shoot one. The guy who lives up there said it's fun and quick. He said I could shoot mine in a day and my whole trip would only be 3-4 days. Can't be good to stress them like that when pregnant and in the harshest time of the winter
