    Moving to Houston

Well, I swore I'd never do it, but a gas company has made me an offer that was impossible to refuse so I'm headed out of the Big D for a job in Big Oil.

I don't know much about the area and will be working downtown in the Wells Fargo Plaza. The new company offers a bus pass or free parking downtown, but I'm thinking the bus would be a better option. I'm NOT a city person so I want to live as far out as is feasible. Right now I'm looking at renting a house in the Woodlands.

I know there's lots of Houston folks on here and was hoping y'all could give me some advice...where to live, where NOT to live, bus vs. commute, how to stay sane working downtown...anything will help.

    Thanks!

H-town can be a fun place to visit but the traffic is outrageous and hwy construction never ends. Waaaay to big for me regardless of where one lives

There are several of us out in the Cypress area, I like it a lot. Also, there is a park n ride for the bus downtown out here in Cypress at Skinner and HWY 290 that has covered parking.

I have lived in the area all my life 44 years. The traffic is bad but after being in Indiana, and driving through Chicago I will never gripe about houston drivers again. These people up here can not drive for anything.

It doesn't matter how far out you go...this city finds you and takes over the area. I remember when Tomball used to be a nice little town outside of Houston (sigh).

Conroe/Woodlands is a great place to reside and you will fit right on in with all the Oil crew in that area

I would use downtown parking vs a bus pass that's just me. I'm not a fan of public transportation.

I spent 35 years trying to get out of that rat hole and made it happen in '07. Best move of my life. I know you weren't asking for my history but I just had to.... I spent my entire life in Cypress which has gone down hill the last time I was there. Used to be a great place. If you consider Cypress, live as far west down 290 as possible. Woodlands is a nice place as well but the traffic on 45 is a killer. Either way, good luck to you and prayers sent.

Downtown sucks. I declined a better paying job, just because I didn't want to go downtown.

Boy, ain't that the truth. When I as a kid we'd drive way out in the country to go eat at Goodson's. Times have certainly changed...
