Rode a horse for the first time

Never been interested in them beyond making sure I wasn't standing behind one, but my uncle's neighbor brought over two of his horses and took me out for about an hour or so ride this morning on about 170 acres scouting around for hogs,. Man that was fun. You can see better, cover a lot of ground, and I was surprised how quickly I picked up "driving" the horse. His horses were Paso Fino or something like that. S'posed to be a smoother ride than other types of horses. They seemed to have a pretty good temperament, or were at least tolerant of me riding em.

The guy takes his horses up to Colorado and packs into the back country to elk hunt. That's gotta be a hell of a trip.

Anyway, I am sure this isn't a big deal to most of ya, but I enjoyed it and hope to try it again sometime.

That's awesome! Did you get the opportunity to drop them reins down and cut across any open fields or trails? Nothin like feeling the power of a horse while their on a dead sprint. Probably wouldn't have been safe for your first time riding but definitely need to do that sometime.

a few other things about hunting from or around a horse. covers the human sent. and deer, hogs, most wildlife does not feel too threatened by them. now if you fire a weapon from the back of a horse. it had better be trained for that.

Shifty in the middle and dangerous at both ends!

Grew up on them and have hit the ground way too hard way too many times. I'm done!

Same here. Back in October I was on a horseback elk hunt in the San Juans in Colorado. On the second morning of the trip we were riding in before daylight and something spooked my horse. He started bucking and I held on for a few bucks before I lost a stirrup. I flipped over his head and landed flat on my back. Hunt over!

                    I can attest to this.

Your inner thighs WILL be sore tomorrow
I rode all the time from about 8 until 14, when one day I galloped up from a gully onto a recently burned field. My mare bucked at the smell and I wasn't prepared - got a concussion (I always rode bareback - she was tall and I was short and the saddle was hard for me to get on her, so I just used my legs and her mane).
Mother made me sell her and I used the money to pay for driver's ed (and got into much worse trouble with a car than I ever did with my horses)
I rode again many years later and, though I loved it as I always had done, I hurt bad the next day and for several days thereafter.
                      Good luck tomorrow

I've always been a huge fan of every single horse I have seen that I was not on top of... I just can't get the fear of falling from out of my head, and the older I get the worse it will be if I do fall! Haha

The wife and I do a trail ride every year or so just for the fun of it, I love being on a horse that is lazy and likes to walk... But the one and only time I got a horse into a trot/canter/whatever, well lets just say that it felt like the berries had fallen off the tree the next day.

Seriously though, they are quite amazing animals and I would recommend everyone who hasn't had the chance to spend a few $$$ and go get a trail ride. If you watch sites like groupon, they seem to be on there every once in a while for a good deal.

It as been said that there is something about the outside of a horse being good for the endside of a man. I think who ever said that knew what his was talking about.

Well, that explains a lot of things

Sorry Martha, but you made that too easy, no offense intended.

I rode them through the mountains in New Mexico for 3 hours, it was awesome. That was the first time for me, it was a little nerve racking but I really enjoyed it.
