Anyone deer hunt with a 45-70 rifle?

Hello, I have been wanting to buy a single shot deer rifle for a while. I was looking for a .243, .270, 30-06. . . etc., not too picky about the caliber just a regular whitetail caliber, but I did want a stainless barrel vs. blued.
I am not finding a whole lot of single shot rifles in my price range $600 or less that are available in a stainless barrel. The one I did find was the H&R Ultra Hunter. . . but it is in a 45-70 which I don't know much about except the few things I found googling it. Does anyone know about this caliber or know if it is suitable for Texas Whitetail hunting? Thanks

It is more than suitable for a little ole whitetail. I would get it, you will be pleased with the drum like thump it makes when you hit a deer with it.

I have an 1863 springfield that I killed a deer with in 1973 and that thing leaves a mark on both ends

        I would keep looking for a .270
Hard to beat such a flat shooting cal & great priced bullet.

I have killed a deer with that caliber. I can tell you that when the bullet hit, the deer looked like it had been hit with a sledgehammer. It literally rolled her all the way onto her back, and she was dead with all four feet sticking straight up in the air. The cool thing was that there was minimal meat damage. Remember the 45-70 is a slow moving, big chunk of lead. It causes a large hole, but not the giant temporary wound cavity that high velocity rounds do. Therefore you don't get all the bloodshot meat. It is a fun cartridge to shoot, with a different sort of recoil more similiar to a black powder rifle than a centerfire. I had lots of fun with mine, until I went to bowhunting almost exclusively.

I'd save up and get a Ruger #1 stainless. That gun will serve you well for the rest of your life. Great accuracy and you can hand load some pretty hot loads for it. The action is very strong!

45-70 is a hoot to shoot. I have 2 of them. If you hunt in an area with shots over 150yrd I would go with a 270/30-06 or something along those lines.

I have and shoot a T/C Hunter model with 2 barrels,a 30-06 and a 7mm mag...My son has a New England Handi Rifle in 25-06...I recently sold a CVA SS Stalker in 7-08....My Grandsons have Rossi single shots in 243 and 7-08....we all hunt with them and love them...If you know you are going to have only one shot ,you will make sure that it is a good one...I couldn't make the CVA shoot 140 grain handloads to my satisfaction so that is why I sold it...it might have done great with another load but I wanted it to handle the same loading as the Rossi....

Its a great brush gun and fun to shoot but if you wear glasses you better tape them on cause it will thump ya pretty good. If you reload you will truly see its full potential. Our primative weapon season in miss we are allowed to hunt with them and like others have said you shouldnt have to track anything even if its gut shot.
