I'm no expert and my dog is not a champion tracker by any means but he went 4 for 4 on deer last season. I had a deer tail tied on a string that I played around with him using. I them made some trails dragging that tail and then I would drop it and circle back to him. And let him hunt it up. I then progressed to using some blood I collected from a doe and simulated a blood trail. I'm not sure how the pros do it but it worked for me and my lab.

I don't know how old your dog is or how long you have had it but you need a good foundation to start. Basic obedience is something that is sometimes overlooked. Playing with your dog and developing good obedience skills on and off the leash can help you learn to "read" your dog and will help the two of you communicate when you are on the track.

He's only 6 weeks and I just got him a few days ago. We're already training on how to sit. Hoping to have the basics down here in the next few weeks.

If you dog is tennis ball addictive like mine is. I would put some deer blood on the ball and stached it in the yard and got her to seek it up. Started her at 8 weeks then I ran mock tracks. She found her first deer at 16 weeks old. She has not lost a deer yet and she is 3 years old. This worked well for me.

I read a book, talked to other "Trackers" with sucessful dogs.

Tip #1. GO SLOW!

Tip #2 Not every dog reguardless of breed will track, or be an effective tracking tool.

Its a lot of fun, as I enjoy dog work and this is something fairly new to me. Matter of fact I layed about a 125-150yrd blood trail about 10:30am. I will be running my 6 month old on it about 4-4:30pm. Its about 20 yrds farther than her last, and 2 90* instead of 1.

Mine did well just laying out track (blood drops) or drags (deer leg/hide) with a treat at the end....when i first got her.. But seemed to really pay more attention and be more focused after I introduced a toy as a reward..
