    dog swallowed a bone...help!

my blue heeler just got a hold of a chicken leg bone...it was only about 3 1/2-4 inches long...nothing sharp on it...but he just grabbed and swallowed...i tried to gag him, but nothing came up...i'm hoping it will pass ok?...i guess i'll check him poop for the next couple days...should i bring him to the vet?

My Labs upset me and sneak all kinds of cr@p down their throat.....if you want to make the dog chuck it up, just poor hydrogen peroxide down the throat.

I don't usually worry unless I know it was poison or they start looking 'wrong' after a strange swallowing. You can tell by lookin at your dog if he's happy or not.

Should be ok, but just keep an eye on him....You will know if you need to go to the vet..

If it was raw it will be OK - it will only potentially splinter and cause problems if it was cooked. Even then I wouldn't be concerned unless I saw bloody stools and such.

I was just reading up on this exact occurance! The article said if they are either cooked or heated and the dog chews them much they can splinter. If they are raw or not chewed then it should pass though ok. It also stated that you can make them swallow a bit of hydrogen peroxide (5-10% stuff at store) and they will puke it back up.

yeah when my other dog ate a bunch of rat poison, they did the hydrogen peroxide thing...i was going to do that, but i didnt know if trying to make the bone come back up would make it get stuck or something...so its proally too late right now to puke it back up...he is running around normal outside right now, so hopefully things are ok

Good luck with your dog. We are waiting on my son to kick out a plum seed. He has been hanging on to it for 2 days now.

As unpleasant as it is, keep an eye on the dog's stools for the next few days, look for blood or black, tarry stuff which is digested blood.

He will likely pass it ok. I don't recommend vommiting in cases where bones are involved because it is much easier to go after a bone in the stomach or small intestine than in the esophagus. Watch for vommiting and/or diarrhea. Dogs likely pass bones like this 99% of the time. Its just in that 1% when it gets stuck it is a wreck. Hydrogen peroxide or a couple handfulls of salt works great for inducing vommiting. I was on a qauil hunting trip w/ six other vets in jan and we were staying is an old farmhouse that 20 miles from anywhere and some one had put out some rat bait and we did not know it. when we saw one of the gsp eating something we all ran over and saw it was rat bait. The only thing in the house I could use was a old container of salt, but it did the trick dog vommited for the next 20 min. There was 7 vets there and our nearest clinic was 1 1/2 away.

My dog did the exact same thing. Should have no problem passing it.

still no bone (that i saw)...but 5 or 6 spots of diarrhea...he ate normally today...and acts normal when i go out to play with him...guess i should just keep checking his stool?

I think I read somewhere to feed it bread.... assuming it can eat it.

Continue to watch him. A few spots of blood don't scare me as long as he feels ok and there is no vommiting. When he poops wash it down w/ water. if the bone broke up it will be in small fragments that will be hard to see.
