Wow, there are some beautiful mounts pictured above!
What I did, was asked the taxidermist to not mount mine on wood, and leave me as long a piece of metal coming out of the mold inside to work with. I started with the pintail and 2 greenwing teal and since they fly together naturally, made a grouping with one teal mounted to see it's belly.
Then I drilled through the sheetrock into the studs and mounted the birds where I wanted them, and painted the metal rod to match the wall. I have a high ceiling in the family room, and it really looks like they're caught in flight since there's nothing obvious holding them up. I've had a number of people do double takes walking into the room.
Here's the detail on the pinny
I continued with the greenhead above the blacktail. When my son moved to Montana he did not want to move his birds, so I gladly offered to safely store them on the wall! Woody and Widgeon over the Laugh letters above the door.
The only mount I do not like is the canvasback on a log, it's well done but just looks odd with all the rest flying.
Looking at a preview of the post, let me add I bought the cross from a guy selling them from the back of a truck in Austin, not far from the Motorola Semiconductor/ Freescale plant.
