Anybody else on the GS a DIY mechanic?

Just wondering how many on here can actually work on their own vehicles

HPOP is leaking on my 99 F250 Powerstroke and today after church the 96 5.8 gas would not run for squat. Got it back to the house with the help of my brother and took me about 2hrs to figure out what the problem was but finally figured out the EGR was bad.
Figure I saved a few hundred fixing it and probably going to save at least a thousand if I fix the HPOP.

I have but it seems with limited time and want to these days, I pay someone else to do it. I'll be taking my Toyota lease truck to a shop tomorrow to get the oil pump replaced. I may even have them do an overhaul if they have to pull the motor to change the pump.

Always save more DIY. I have a 97 Powerstroke diesel. Never have replaced the HPOP. Have saved at least 5k doing things myself though. Hub bearings, waterpump, loose turbo, and many other things. I grew up around a man that did everything himself. My dad is one of the smartest people i know and if you put your mind to something you can do it. Little research and some time is all you need. Good feeling when your done.

I had an 02 F250 that started leaking at the HPOP. Still under warranty and all it was was the oring/seal. Pump was still good.

I do as much as I'm able to do mechanic wise. I know my limitations though. Can't afford to take a vehicle in everytime it acts up. Research and internet is a very helpful tool if used right.

typically, if I can get a wrench on it I fix it myself
But, I was going to do a plug change on my trailblazer a couple year ago and could not even find them
Newer vehicles are a much larger chore

I always tell myself I'm just going to pay someone else to do the work but never can bring myself to pay the high prices. I put a clutch on my sons car and saved about 1k. I hated every minute of it but after I was done I treated myself to a new bow with the money I saved.

I do all my own work on my '84 bronco, '96 BMW 328i, and '93 ZX-7 Ninja. Old stuff but good when it runs and it was paid for many years ago. Insurance is cheap, too.

Often I'm tempted to buy something newer, but it doesn't last long.

A good mechanic is worth gold , but with two sons driving in addition to the wife & me I am the mechanic. Latest projects have been replacing an axle and exhaust.

Recently had mechanic tell my wife she needed a new timing belt for $1200, it was just the tensioner $150 in parts and about 4 hours labor .

If you replace the hpop also replace the ipr valve that is mounted on th housing for the hpop. Labor rate on it is roughly 8 to 9 hours so prepare for some long hours.

Yep, dealership told my wife several years ago that the trailblazer needed $1350 worth of work done, timing belt was one of the things they mentioned.
Well I said no way it needed that stuff. Well it's been 112k miles since and nothing they mentioned has ever been replaced.
I do all the work I can and hope for the best on the rest.

Guy told my wife 4hrs labor plus parts, don't know if he has done it enough to be that fast or way misquoted the price

Going to order the parts and give it a shot
