Can a change in release help your target panic?

You know I have been slinging arrows a long time and would consider myself an above average shooter. I mean I guess I have over come most of my shooting problems given the time invested. But one that I suffer from and cant seem to kick is target panic.

I mean as odd as it sounds if I know I'm not going to shoot I can settle in just fine. But if I am lining up for an actual shoot I just cant seem to hold still and pull the trigger.

I did solve the same problem years ago with the rifle by way of a 1 1/2 lb. trigger pull. It seems that not having to take my attention off the target and process the mechanics of the action of pulling the trigger was the answer.

But with the bow I just can't seem to reach this point. I did see a show on a sporting channel the other day where a guy described a change to a thumb trigger release that helped him.

To the point, any input would really be appreciated as my buds just aren't buying my blaming my million dollar equipment any longer. LOL

Typically, when you make a release change, your shooting improves to a point, but I think it's mostly mental.
You won't cure your target panic simply by just changing releases, you've got to fix your head, so you can control target panic.

Yes, it can help. I was getting pretty jumpy with a wrist strap/index finger release. Went to a hand held thumb release and has improved.

I just made this change also. I shot my bow yesterday for the first time after getting the new release and got my bow tuned in at 15 yds. Ya it's not very far and this may just be me but I seemed to shoot tighter groups. With a wrist strap I was always getting the pin on the dot and jerking the trigger. Now I can concentrate on pin on dot and just ease my thumb into it.

I agree and disagree with Rocky to a degree. Target panic is "mental" so there is a chance a simple equipment change will reset the mental side and you will be good to go. I've done the same with putters (why I own so many and swap) as the fixes can often be temporary given the "mental" aspect.

Lot's of experienced archers here who can share their own solutions. Good luck in finding a long term solution for yours!

What Rocky said. TP is mental and has to be controlled no matter what release you use. A release change will help for a while, but it will eventually come back. you never really get rid of TP, you learn to control it. A release called the Whalen's Hooker and a CD by AJ the TP Guru (he is a member on here) helped me learn to control my TP after a 10+ year battle with it.

What release did you end up with? I've heard of one that releases but weight of pull or can be use as a normal thumb release.

Any help by changing to another release will be very temporary at best. As it has allready been stated it is mental, and thou it is mental, it is not completely mental. Curing TP is relatively simple to do as it was done with my TP during my FITA shooting years by Mr Al Henderson. (one of our best Olympic coaches ever). The same question was presented here before, and i tried to explain the very simple workings of getting rid of TP, and was slammed for my effords. So do not waste money on gimmicks and seek help from people that have experience in solid shooting technique. Maybe some friends that were able to cure target panic, and at times in a matter of minutes will chime in, and guide you thru. I learned my lesson here.I was not given the chance to go into the second phase of the explanation.

I will give you a hint, target panic usually comes from continuously shooting your bow at the verge of total shooting technique collapse.

The release change may "feel" better for a while but until you cure the mental stuff it is just a band-aid.

I got the Carter Easy 1. It's a closed hook and strictly a thumb release. I've played with a back tension release before but I don't believe they are for me yet. Lot of people confirmed that those are a good way to play Mike Tyson punch out with yourself if you aren't careful.
