    Hog or Cattle panels?

Got on a lease that has mule deer and whitetails and am getting ready to build feeder pens. Ranch has cattle and am wondering about an alfalfa feeder for the mulies. The 50" cattle panels should keep the cattle out and let the deer in but I am afraid some of the cows might be fence jumpers if I go with the hog panels. Any of you guys use the higher height? Would you cut an 18" wide gap in one of the panels for the smaller deer(fawns and yearlings)?

hog panel is basically the same but has smaller gaps on the bottom to keep the piglets out or in

I like the cattle panels......and either cut the top row off of all of them or once they are up, I strategically cut places for them to jump where I can see and shoot them if needed.

The are #1 cheaper and #2 I like that cutdown 42-44" height better than 34"

We use hog pannels and then just put a strand of barbed wire above it about a foot.

I used 50" panels around one of my feeders and it kept all the cattle and a lot of the deer out. I put a
36" panel on two sides and so far the cows have stayed out. Thinking about using a solar powered electric fence around next one to see how that works . Anyone with experience trying that?

Buy the cattle panels and cut some rows out. We normally dont cut the entire row. cut maybe a 4ft piece and 2-3 rows in each panel. I beleive the cows see the tall part more than the short piece so they dont try to get in. Do not leave them all 4ft tall. I have had a couple young deer hang themselves and a nice young 130" buck a month before the season.

I used a Gallager with 4 strands. Piglets got in early but only for a couple weeks. As they got a little bigger, they got popped.

Doe were in feeder regularly...bucks skirted the outside.

Dreamer1 has some experience putting it around a good size food plot as well.

Our mule deer eat corn when I hand corn the roads but they don't seem to get in the feeder pens. I was thinking the alfalfa feeder might do the trick. I think if I try one of the water stations from the diy forum also it might bring in the big boys if the pen is large enough.

It took a while but our mulies come in to pens and are using water stations. Click image for larger version

Do you feed alfalfa in the pen? How long did it take to start drawing the mulies in to the pens?

It took one season and yes I do through a bail out every once in a while. That pen is 4 panels by 4 panels.

Thanks Smart. He made it through this season and is now hanging around the cabin rubbing it in.
