Out of State Deer Outfitters...Need Suggestions

I'm looking hard into doing an out of state hunt this year, but still undecided on exactly what and where. I would love to hunt huge mule deer, but I'm also thinking about a Midwest whitetail hunt. I would appreciate any info regarding your experience or suggestions. I'm looking for a guided hunt rather than a DIY hunt. Some ideas are Kansas or Illinois whitetail and New Mexico or Colorado mule deer. I'm not sure exactly how much I'm looking to spend, but let's keep it around $5k if possible.

    Thanks,
    Brandon

If I was going to go on an out of state hunt for whitetail I would be looking at the Milk River in Montana - The country is awesome and the way you hunt them up there is right up my alley (just because that is the way I grew up hunting). TONS of animals and some really nice bucks as well

Spot n Stalk mile deer has always sounded very appealing.

Montana WT would be awesome, but some of the areas along the Milk River lost around 75% of the deer herd about 2 years ago. You may check with the local DNR before you settle on Montana.

Well I have been in the guide-outfitting business for some 35+ years and I am an ardent hunter myself.

To find what you want you first need to focus on exactly what you want in order to select outfitters that have what you are looking for............... then you start the process of weeding through them to find the one you want to send your hard earned cash to for a deposit.

You need to figure out what your budget is and look at places and outfitters that fall in your budget. Mule deer hunts range from $2500 to $8000 and more. Do want a guaranteed permit or are you willing to put in a draw for 3 or 4 years until you finally draw? Do you want a horseback hunt in the mountains or are you content with a ranch hunt?

Set your parameters, then look. Get a list of guys offering what you want at the price you can afford. Then check CURRENT references. Maybe call fish and game department and ask about the deer herds in that area. Ask about recent winter kills and/or predator problems. Call and talk to the outfitter a couple of times and get a feel for him/her. Have a list of set questions to ask each outfitter............. cause you will forget to ask half of them if you do not have a list to follow.

If you do your homework properly and do not approach it in a scattered and inconsistent
way, you will avoid unwanted surprises.

Milk River Outfitters is who I would be going with if I went - they have hosted the Realtree crew (amongst plenty others) every year for a LONG time

I know there are better places.

BUT, when I go I go to michigan. my grandpa has a farm in southern michigan (20 minutes from ohio border)... BIG bodied deer.

if I want to hunt cool swamp bucks we go to the property we have in the UP (upper peninsula of michigan)

I have free food and lodging when I go. that is a BIG plus!

Go to South Dakota and hunt muley, whitetail and pronghorn all at the same time. Some seasons overlap or run concurrently. I've filmed a few hunts with Cody and will put my money in his camp in the future.
