    Feeder Question... Manual Feeder?

I was at WalMart today and saw the Moultrie feeders that require a deer to manually activate the feeder through a tube that hangs below the bucket. They were on sale.

Would something like that actually work? Seems to me you would have to first prove to them that moving the activator makes corn come out.

What is your take on these?

Years ago we used to build something similar to that. We were getting 5 gal pickle buckets for free. We would take a broom stick and put a screw through one end making a T. We would then cut a hole in the bottom of the bucket slightly larger than the broom stick. Then drop the broom stick down through the hole with the screw "T" at the top inside the bucket. Fill it with corn and hang in a tree with the bottom of the broom stick about 4' off the ground. The idea was that the deer would use their nose to knock corn out. We had limited success with them, but at that time we had very limited success getting deer to come to corn at all.

Believe it or not, the deer do in fact figure them out. They smell the corn and "accidentally" bump the dowel and corn falls out...next thing you know, Jyoung can't keep one full for a day in his back yard.

I have the bucket model as well as the moultree model, I think I paid like seven bucks for them at the end of the season last year. I couldn't get the one I put up at Ft. Hood to work, but that's because some thief stole it.

Yep, they work but once they figure it out they will drain it in about 8 hours

I had one up here at the house but spent way to much keeping it filled so I took it down.

What I did to get them to figure it out was put some corn right under the pole that comes out the bucket, when they fed, they would hit it (not on purpose), after that they figured out there was gold inside and they wouldn't leave it alone until it was drained.

So, with one of these could you put it higher than a pig, but just in the reach of a deer, and basically eliminate any little pigs eating all of your corn?

Yeah, the deer will actually stand up on their hind legs to hit it.

Cedar limbs work great cause they love to rub on em. We have used those for years and they do work good.

I used to use one a long time ago. Had some success. I still have a homemade one laying out behind the wood pile at home. If anyone wants to try it out and experiment, I'll give it to ya!!

When I first moved to Texas I used a 55 gallon drum with a broom handle stuffed inside and a few nails through the middle to make sure it didn't come out the bottom.

The deer figured it out pretty quick.

Yeah, I've got a few buckets around if anyone wants to try them.

And after getting mine stolen last year, I painted one HOT FLUORESCENT PINK!
Nobody wanted to steal that one.
