I posted my first attempt at making grips for a 1911 a couple weeks ago. I think I'm starting to really gain some traction here. My hope is to start flipping a few of these in my down time to help fund some other hobbies.
I started stippling patterns into them and using a checkering tool to make a nice border around it. I've been experimenting with different finishes, and haven't found the one I'm die-hard satisfied with. These are finished with a 50-50 mix of shellac/denatured alcohol. I'm looking for something even harder, like an epoxy finish, but with the price of that stuff, I might need to flip a couple of these just to afford it.
So what say you guys? The first is Honduran rosewood, the second is cocobolo. Any knife makers have any tips to make these things bomb proof finish wise? My goal is to make a serious, hard working grip, not a safe queen show grip.
