Think my grip making is getting better...yes/no??

I posted my first attempt at making grips for a 1911 a couple weeks ago. I think I'm starting to really gain some traction here. My hope is to start flipping a few of these in my down time to help fund some other hobbies.

I started stippling patterns into them and using a checkering tool to make a nice border around it. I've been experimenting with different finishes, and haven't found the one I'm die-hard satisfied with. These are finished with a 50-50 mix of shellac/denatured alcohol. I'm looking for something even harder, like an epoxy finish, but with the price of that stuff, I might need to flip a couple of these just to afford it.

So what say you guys? The first is Honduran rosewood, the second is cocobolo. Any knife makers have any tips to make these things bomb proof finish wise? My goal is to make a serious, hard working grip, not a safe queen show grip.

I like the dark ones. But they are both very nice.

Thanks. I seem to get a lot more compliments on the darker woods, like the wenge grips I made that have the same pattern. Also done bocote and zebrawood. Have some padauk that iI'm going to start on in a couple days.

Ever tried CA/super glue as a finish? Not sure how it would work with the stippling, but it is bulletproof on slingshots and fountain pens. I've used it for years.

Nice!! How much are you asking for them when I get a 1911 I might talk to you. Do you do custom images or just patterns

Leaning towards something like $50 a pair. Haven't tried anything other than patterns that I can tape out yet. Images might be a challenge for me at this point as everything is done by hand. Right now all I have access to is a Ruger 1911, and they all get fitted to that gun. So anything with ambi safeties, bob tail grips, or officer size frame I can't fit.

I have been contemplating that idea, but haven't figured out how I want lay it out yet.

Those look good. My grandpa makes gun grips out of all types of wood, plastic, and bone and sells them at the gun show in San Antonio. He also burns designs into them with some kind of laser machine.

Might give you some work-- Looking for blanks stippled and colored FDE.
Ive painted some but the finish rubs off real quick.

Can you make thin 1911 grips?

those look good. Try using tru-oil gun stock finish. I know it will make the sanded portion of your grips pop, but im not sure about the textured areas. Let us know how it turns out. cliff
