Experience with a red fox urine cover scent

    My brothers,

I want to share kinda weird experiece I just had using the red fox cover scent while hunting, once I was seated on a high tripod and the other one in a ground natural blind.

I placed a little red fox cover scent gel in a branch about 20 yards away and around my position, then I took position and got ready for my early morning hunt.

After some minutes an old doe along with a fawn stepped out of the brush and started coming to the feeder, then about 4 yds to reach the branch impregnated with the scent they come to a sudden stop and started a nervous behavior, ears pointed back and forth, sniffing the air and looking in all directions.

I like to spray my clothes with scent away products ( which by the way they seem to work really good all the times) I also like to wear all my clothes and lay down right below one of the feeders and roll a little in the soil, this way my clothes are impregnated with all the animal odors who came and eat there
(kinda weird and very particular way but useful).

This time I thought that could be good to put some extra cover scent since the shots would be closer than ussual, despite all my precautions once that they smell the scent both, the fawn and doe refused to continue is way to the feeder and left, they never saw me and through my binoculars I realized that they were looking staight to the spot where I placed that scent.

Then the following day I switched to the tripod and did the same thing, I placed a little gel around the tripod, that time a herd of javies came out and started eating the scattered corn I placed on the sendero, I waited for the perfect shot and nailed a big one who barely took more than 15 steps before expiring, I was using mechanical broadheads and lots of blood was splattered in the ground, some bushes and cactus, that javi made real eerie loud growling sounds before dying.

I decided not to climb down since I saw that the javi was dead and waited in hopes for the rest to come again but they didn`t, then about no more than 10 minutes after the javi shot a big coyote came out of the brush apparently atracted and looking for the javi in trouble, he came trotting quickly and then it happened again...right when he reached one of the spots where I placed the fox urine he stopped and sniffed, this time I saw clearly that he was sniffing straight to the branch, he even closed the distance until he was no more than a feet or two, he backed a little and then started making a circle to continue it`s way to the downed javi but then for some reason he left.

Did someone ever had the same experience? did this scent has a completely other purposse?

Yes I know some should say I should bath more often ha-ha-ha, no that wasn`t the problem I took a bath using the scent away products on me and my clothes, the problem was just with the fox scent and I would like to know or realize what I did wrong in order to learn form the mistake.

    Thanks for your answers...

I haven't used red fox pee in a long time. One reason is I have never seen one or heard anyone seeing one where we hunt however I have seen grey foxes. Secondly if I use an animal urine cover scent I prefer coon urine because they frequent the feeders and that's makes it a normal scent around the feeder. Just my .02 sry if didn't give you a specific answer.

Thank`s brother I appreciatte your quick answer,

Even when there`s a lot of foxes in my hunting grounds yes you`re right, seems like it`s more common for coons to frequent the feeders and I think I made a mistake purchasing a fox urine instead of coon, hope someone else has a similar experience.

      Thank`s again...

I have not had the experience, but I enjoyed reading your experiences and I don't think I'll be trying that stuff anytime too soon.

Yes!! I just realized that the best I can do with this scent is to NEVER USE IT AGAIN!

          Jajajaja!

I use to use fox cover scent and on a couple occasions and deer leave the area after smelling it. I switched to coon and I've had better results.

I left some in a gun blind by mistake and the following season found it and opened it.

Foxes are predators. Deer don't like predators!

I wonder if rolling in the soil leaves more of your scent on the ground under your feeder than it does picking up scent on your clothes? Just a thought.

Personally, I don't go near my feeder before I hunt.

It depends how you roll. If you roll correctly you pick up the ground scent...if you have the wrong technique you leave your scent. Hard to explain without seeing it and coaching someone through it.

Proudredneck if you could post a video of how you roll, I'm sure we can help you with this delimna.

If your gonna use a cover scent I concur with the raccoon. You could also use rabbit or doe, any non predator scent would be less alarming.

                            Hey PR,

I have never seen very many fox in South Texas, and never a red.

Of the few that I have seen, Coyotes were hot on the heels of two of them.

Coyotes hate them with a passion and will kill every one they can catch.

That’s probably why the coyote stopped to check it out the scent.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the fox scent is not what originally brought the coyote to you in the first place even though he was checking out the Javi.

The doe on the other hand may have never smelled fox before because there are so few of them down South. If it had been coyote urine I doubt you would have got the same reaction.

I’m sure there are places down south that have fox; but all the places I’ve been on had way too many coyotes for fox to survive in any numbers.

Find some skunk fusion, works better than all the others I've tried
