    2006 F150 issues.

My 4x4 isn't working and it's running rich and sounds like it has an exhaust leak.

Could the noise and running rich be a timing chain issue?

How do I diagnose the 4x4 or do I just take it to a mechanic?

    It's a 2006 lariat crew cab 4x4 with 170,000 miles

Exhaust leak will sound like something clicking when your on the gas.

    Not sure about your 4x4?
Do you have Manual locking hubs?

No on manual locking hubs. A buddy of
Mine has a 2005 and his mechanic told him it sounded like an exhaust leak but was a timing chain issue and he better get rid of it or get ready to spend a bunch of money on it. Ever hear that?

On the 4x4 there was a vacuum solenoid on the firewall that failed all the time. 6L3Z9H465B @$50

not sure how a timing chain could make an exhaust leak sound....I believe that has a 4.6 or 5.4 in it which is a mod engine...two timing chains which will stretch over time...sometimes you can hear the chain slacking and hitting the tensioners if they are not doing their job.....still don't picture the exhaust leak sound though. if the computer is not throwing any codes such as a timing sensor out of whack or something along those lines (in which case it would be running like crap if running at all) or o2 sensor related codes or it will even tell you if you are running lean or rich or if it can't see a sensor, I don't believe it's anything with the chain....hard to validate without at the very least pulling valve covers and checking chain tension on a warm engine...

one of the ford mechanics might know of more tricks but this is what I know from messing with the mod engines.

You could have dozens of issues causing a vehicle to run rich... Mass air flow, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump, vacuum leak, intake leak, etc. is the mil light on? My suggestion is to take and have it diagnosed?

Proof TBH is the center of the internet universe:

Googleing "cam phaser issue" yields a list of links. No. 7 is a link to a TBH thread from 3 years ago.

Vacuum solenoid on the 4x4... My '05 did it. It also had timing chain and cam phazer issues along with trying to blow out the number 8 plug several times... Traded it off 6 mos ago before I had to put heads or a motor in it...

My 06 needed 2 new Camshaft position sensor and that took care of my check engine light and smothed the running of my truck out.

I have worked for Ford for 13yrs,you have a 5.4l motor I suppose with a lariat pkg.An elbow fitting on the back of your intake collapses and causes rough idle, rich condition and causes a vacuum loss.Your hubs will be affected by this and exibit a ratcheting noise from hubs on accell. There was a recall on the PCV elbow a few years ago,not something you would want to tackle yourself. It takes 15 minutes by a trained tech with his special tools he made to reach it from underneath.Other than that,4x4 inop on your truck usually was the vac solenoid or the hub actuators on the spindles. The vac solenoid sucks in water draining down the wiper cowl"the new one has a shield".This water drains down the tubes to the actuators also.Good luck, hope all this helps.
