my hawken 50 says black powder only on barrel. can i use pyrodex safely instead

i have a bottle of the hodgon pyrodex RS. it says FFG equivalent... it also says smokeless powder. my charles daly hawken says black powder only on barrel. So is the pyrodex stuff i have safe to shoot in it? honestly the guy i bought it from gave me the pyro as well as some bullets and cleaning supplies but he had never shot it. my friend and i shot it 5 times the other day and seemed to work fine but i just realized it said bp only so now im a little worried about shooting it again..

Pyrodex is fine. It was developed as a substitute for Black Powder.

Yes you can use a black powder substitute in a Hawkin Rifle

You can use it. Be aware though that some bp substitutes such as Triple7 are stronger than real bp, measure your load accordingly.

im putting 70 grains only. i was looking at some things on youtube about not using modern smokeless powder or something and it got me worried. so the pyrodex says smokeless on bottle but is it not modern?

That's what I shoot in mine. No problems.

70 grains should be a good starting point. Remember Pyrodex is substituted for Black Powder on a volume, not a weight basis.

The first deer I ever killed fell to a .50 Hawken in 1977. I was shooting a TC Maxi-Ball in front of 97 grains of FFg black powder.

Pyrodex FFG is fine for your black powder rifle and it is the same as FF in the regular black powder which is what is recommended for .50 calibur.. 70 grains by powder measure volume is a good starting point.
