    OT: what would you do?

I'm about to pay off the wife's Tahoe in a few days and I am considering selling it to pay cash for a used Jetta with similar mileage(100k on the Tahoe).

There is nothing wrong with the Tahoe at all, just looking to downsize as we have one child and looking to stop getting raped at the gas pump.

Am I completely stupid for thinking about doing this????

I'm single and I own a Tahoe. 180K miles, no problems. I've been hit by another car while driving this Tahoe. The Tahoe didn't budge and the car fell apart. I'm willing to spend the extra money for gas just for feeling safe while driving it.

That and the ability to pull a trailer are positives in my mind as well

If you travel long distances I would consider making the change to a Jetta. If not, I would rather have the Tahoe, especially if it is paid off.

If she travels a lot I would say do it!

Jetta at 100k is done... Like grampa on oxygen, On a walker. It's about to fall apart. My sister likes vw's and learned recently that 100k equals death to them.

Tahoe at 100k is just past middle age... Still got some pep but will need to fix a few things here and there.

My wife has a Tahoe that we are about to trade in on a burban.... As soon as we find the right deal. Her tahoe is payed off too..

I'd say stick with the Tahoe. It's a safer bet all the way around. If you want better gas mileage get a newer one... They've really been working on the gas mileage in the newer Chevys. As my 09 4x4 with oversized tires and my lead foot gets better mileage then her z71 02.

If you have a pickup and can pull a trailer with it, then I say do it. We have a little Honda Civic that gets almost 40mpg (hwy). Hard to beat that. Gotta admit I feel a little less manly when I drive it, though.

Really? I know 3 people with VW's, all with well over 100K. 1 Passat, 1 Jetta, and one Rabbit, all Diesels... heh... the Rabbit runs on refined vegetable oil that the guy gets for free, from fast food resturaunts, and refines in a cargo trailer that the car can pull behind it.

As for downsizing, count me among the downsizing bandwagoneers... I went from driving a Tundra(14mpg) 110 miles each way, to driving a Kia Soul. Even with taking on a new car payment(truck was paid off), I'm saving money. The soul is rated at 30 mpg hwy, but I average 38-42 mpg on most tanks. Just had my best tank at 44 mpg. Then again, I drive it extremely conservatively.

Volkswagon has absolutely the worst service on the planet. They are horrible about recalls and will find any reason they can to not fix anything with out a hassle. I Can't believe I let My daughter talk me into getting a second one for her to replace her Beetle. This time its a Passat thats been OK so far. I couldn't believe the cheap chrome plating on her plastic stock shifter in the Passat, started coming off and sliced her hand open to where she bled like a stuck pig... did they care? Heck no! Just said that interior accents aren't covered. Yes I blew up and was escorted out. They, Clear Lake VW, lost a two time customer, and I'll punk them out every chance I get. Horrible quality wiring too. The insulation rots off where I've had to jury rig insulate entire wires with electrical tape... yep, on both cars. They even lost a sun visor and didn't want to replace it, and when they did, it was a different year model that looked totally different.

                  KEEP THE PAID FOR TAHOE

the way i look at buying one or selling one....

you know all the problems in the past and current with what you have. buy another one and you dont and may find out quick. if it does the job reliably, and comfortably, then keep it.

i can afford a brand new truck, and have thought real hard about it. but i keep talking myself out of it. im still driving my 04 dodge with 150k on it. its like a part of the family lol my wife actually got mad when i said i thought about selling it.

If its the diesel Jetta, dump the Tahoe.

I have a 2004 Jetta with 189k. Still running strong, but I am very particular about maintenance. I want a truck so bad, but getting 35 mpg on a bad day is too sweet a deal. I'll drive mine into the ground happily.

As a VW mechanic for the past 10 years, I can assure you that you are wrong coach.

I have had plenty of jettas with 200,000+ miles on gasoline engines and 412,000 on one diesel engine. The maintenance is high and others have stated trim is not covered under certain warranty repairs. But then again chevy knows they have inferior chevy bowtie badges that crack and split and will not warranty them. All companies have their issues.

I may just keep it and put some nice wheels on it to make momma's ride a little more manly. Lol!
