which way to go with 10/22

I want to build a little tactical style .22 thinking Ruger 10/22 how should I go about it? will $300 get me started? Should I buy a used setup or buy a stock one and buy the parts as I can? Or should I buy a new one outfitted this way?
I want to build something that is fun for me to plink with and adjustable/light enought for a growing 5 year old to handle.

and if anyone wants to post some pictures of your set up that would be great

I would buy a stock Ruger 10/22 and buy aftermarket parts later. The price just depends on what you're wanting. There are alot of different things you can do with a 10/22 as far as tricking it out goes. You can even convert it to a .17Mach2 if you want.

I don't need to make it look like a AR. Just maybe an upgraded barrell? if neccesary. an adjustable stock. an option for a silencer would be cool. any one done that?

I did a quick search and found a Tapco 6 position collapsible stock for around $90 if your'e lookin for something like that. The barrel is where you'll probably spend most of the money on this project I'm guessin depending on which one you get.

Anything made by Magnum Research or Volquartsen will be more expensive. If you're not wanting to spend around $300 on a barrel E.R. Shaw,Green Mountain or Butler Creek are good options.

I used a tactical solutions barrel that is suppressor ready and a hoage stock. It's super light and a tack driver.
