No conference talk crap. Let's talk BCS playoff format.

What do you feel should be the final format for BCS playoffs?
I know it is going to start off at 4 teams, but is that enough?

Look at it this year. Would it have solved all questions? I think with 4 teams only you are highly likely to have a very good 1 loss team in the mix and maybe 3 undefeated big program teams. How do you decide which 1 loss team is the best? What about the Non BCS team that may be undefeated. They s get left out.
I think an 8 team playoff would be best to answer those questions. There is only going to likely be 2-3 undefeated BCS schools, and maybe one non-BCS school. And about 2-4 solid one loss teams. Shouldn't they all get in the mix?

This year if OSU was eligible what would it look like to you? Would 4 teams be the best and answe all questions, or would 8 answer more?

I may be wrong but I thought the 4 team format is set in stone for something like 10 years so it may all just be moot. Also, having 2 or 3 undefeated schools every year is a stretch.

I have always said to keep the current BCS system. Add two more Bowls. the Cotton and one other, possibly up north in a dome. Take the top 8 in the standings. 1v8 and so on. Play the Cotton, Orange, Fiesta and the new one on NY Day. bring back that tradition. The Rose and the Sugar are the semi finals the next Saturday with the BCS Title game the following Monday.

However, the 4 team model will still be a vast improvement. Had it been in place since the inception of the BCS two games we would have seen for all the marbles would have been 2008 TX v Fla and 2010 TCU v Aub. Both Texas teams would have had a fine chance. there was not an undisputed champion either of those years.

I think something similar to the FCS playoff would work fine. 4 teams is certainly not enough.....8 probably isn't...16 would probably do...the FCS has 20.

If you look at that Colorado team from 2001 and this years A&M team (2 loss teams during the regular season)...down the stretch they were playing some of the best football in the nation. Give those type of teams a shot.

I have a playoff plan to solves all problems, but no one wants to implement it. I've emailed to BCS, NCAA and even ESPN to get the idea out there. You asked for it, so here it is

          8 team playoff needed

To maintain the importance of the regular season, the first 6 spots in the playoffs will be awarded to the 6 conference champions in the automatic leagues. The next two spots will go to the champion(s) of one of the at large conferences provided they are in the top 10 in the BCS standings. We may or may not have one, in which case those two spots then go to the highest ranked second place teams. The playoff starts at the beginning of the bowl season and finish with the national champs, thus not extending the season past the current finals date. The first round will take place at the higher ranked teams field, eliminating the concern of fans not wanting to travel all over the country during all these games. Also helps ensure a sell out ($$$$). Then the BCS bowls can be used the same way they are being planned to be used with the 4 team format. Now you don't have to play against the Jr college down the street to pad your schedule because non conference games don't prevent you from qualifying, so go ahead and test yourselves and play someone tough. But, you still need to take care of business in your league

This would take away too much of the importance of games every Saturday. 8 is as large as it should go. Win your games and get in.

I agree with this. I think 8 is the absolute max. Four really is plenty.

Then you must not like the Texas High School Football format.

Actually I don't. All this Div 1 and Div 2 grabage. Three teams from each district getting in, some with losing records. But the two are not the same.

Is one of the reasons they don't make it 8-16 teams because they would have to lose some of the OOC games to fit the playoffs in the schedule, thus losing money for the smaller schools that rely on the OOC payoffs? Or would they keep a 12 game schedule and extend the season.

Make it 32 teams. 5 weeks of games. They are all off in December anyway. Then there would be no doubt. Make it a 10 game season if necessary. If you want 12 regular season games, start the 1st of September. Schedule you off week(s) and plan for playoffs. National championship would be Jan 4, 2014.

Use the bcs format like it is, then take the top 12 during the December lull into a tournament system. Then take your top four winners into a series of big bowl games.

                            Bingo!

I once coached a 3-7 football team that made the playoffs, next year coached the program to 8-2, didn't make the playoffs. I didn't like it, either year, but no one cared what I thought!

Are you saying that the title game is 2 days after or 9 days after?

2 days is not enough recovery time for any team...
