    vortex viper pst owners!!

ok, i have been looking at scopes for awhile for a 1k yard gun.... gun is complete, and i was going to use my leupold vxiii 8.5-25x50lr but it works so well on the gun its currently on i hate to take it off....

i have some major questions before i jump on this vortex....

i am looking at the viper pst 6-24x50 with ebr-1 moa reticle, second focal plane (ill be using it on max power all the time so a sfp scope will work fine)

i have owned a viper (standard, not the hs or pst) and was not impressed.... good for the money but my leupold spanked its tail all around.... leupold was far optically superior and this is what im concerned about.... what scope would you compare the clarity to? is it clear in the entire sight picture? how does the sun affect it? (the sun washed out the other viper i had, and my leupold does NOT do that)

how many moa in elevation in in the reticle from the center to the bottom?

how do you like the zero stop? seems cheesy but better than nothing....

comparing the reticle subtensions to the turrets, are they equal? say i turn the turret to 10 moa up, or hold over to the 10 moa subtension, will they hit in the same spot?

any things you dislike about them?

this scope seems to be what im needing and wanting, but the other vortex flat out sucked....

i know i should buy a NF but i dont wanna pony up the jack to get one yet....

    let me know!!

PM Arrowsmith. He is a Vortex seller. He has helped a ton of people on here.
Sounds like you are not to fond of Vortex and you are trying to talk yourself into another one to save money. If that is the case I don't think you will be happy with it.
I love both of my Vipers I have. I just have the regular Viper HS

The Viper PST's are great scopes.

The only problem with the Viper PST scopes is GETTING them.

Even though they were on the Vortex website all of last year they just started becoming available last fall. The website stated this but most people do not read the fine print. Anyway...a few have gone out to dealers but they are hard to get at this time. I have been able to get a few and have sold a few to TBHers but the wait time is anywhere from two weeks to two months. Hopefully there will be a good supply of the PST models soon.

If you are not reading the "snipershide" then you need to start. They have a lot more people doing the long range shooting over there. They swap high end scopes all the time. I wish I could answer your questions but I'm just getting set up myself.

I would suggest either the Nightforce or Leupold. I have the Nightforce 5.5-22x56. It is a great scope. I just wish it had the zero stop, but it wasn't offered when I purchased the scope. The Viper PST looked nice at the TTHA show but I haven't looked through one outdoors. If you are looking to save some money then I would check out a Burris tactical or black diamond. You can check out the SWFA samplelist and see if you can find a good used demo model too.

Hey Trophy-I have a 6x24 PST FFP on my 300 win and my 7 mag. My brother has the same scope in a SFP on his 7 rem mag. I used to know exactly how much moa adj. I had remaining (cant remember-i can click it up and let you know if you want to know) but I'll tell you that we shoot 1K all the time and I have enough moa with the 300 and my brother shoots 1k on his 7 mag with plenty of adj. The clarity seems to be controversial with people-but we love ours(I had leupolds & nikons on my guns before I swapped them out for vortex, and won't look back)! I was facing a slope with the sun in my face one evening this year, and took out a cow elk at 816. I shot a 5x5 bull last year facing the sun(same slope/evening hunt) at 600 with the other gun-i had no issues with sun washout. As for the tracking-you wont find a tighter system, never had a hitch with any of them -very accurate. The moa on the lens/crosshairs work great(I "tested" these when I got the scope)-I dont rely on them too much cause i have enough moa adj.-keep in mind too that they are in 2 moa increments, not 1 moa increments. The zero stop is a must if you plan on hunting with your scope(like we do-miles & miles of still hunting out west)-you will be so glad you have it. Problem with turrets when hunting , is they tend to crawl/travel off of zero due to rubbing even when they are covered(which is a must)-with the zero stop, it'll give you a piece of mind and it is easy to come back to zero(time is crucial sometimes when setting up on a shot opportunity). Like you I wanted an NF but didn't want to poney up. We love ours, for the money-you absolutely cannot beat them.

I have one myself with the FFP but in mil-mil. It's the best scope I've owned. Maxed out turret wise and a little hold over I can reach a mile with my 300 RUM.

Look's like 65MOA and the subtentions seem to be just fine on my friend's rifle. The zero stop doesnt mean much to me, I can dial down at a glance. The optic's are very clear and honestly, I dont see spending the extra cash on a higher priced scope just for the name, Vortex get's the job done.

                              Matt,

Saw this one this morning while looking at getting another scope clamp.

Looks like they have the 6-24x50 Viper PST on sale.
