Prepaid Legal has Identity Theft Prevention and is what i have. They do recovery and investigation. If identity is stolen, a risk management company named Kroll comes in and does recovery and investigation. I had my identity stolen two months ago. They made a counterfeit card of my debit card and were charging it in New York. I caught it quickly and acted quickly. For anyone going thorugh this, you must file a police report, fill out affidavits and forms at your bank and you will likely recover your money in a timely manner. But when they steal your social security number and start using it to open accounts, that is when you really need identity theft insurance.
Yes, you, the individual, can put a fraud alert on each of the three credit reporting agencies. It expires every so often (I think every 90 days) but don't quote me on the amount of time it expires. You can then call them back and renew it. You can also do a permanent freeze on your credit, which alot of people are unaware of. In this situation; however, you cannot get a loan or buy a car unless you call and unfreeze it. But it is the most surefire way to not have anyone out there attempting or using your information to open l ines of credit.
You should look for an identify theft product that offers investigation and recovery. It would have taken me hours to do what they did and they were nice folks.
And they send you credit monitoring reports once a month (I think) for any credit activity that has taken place in your credit file.
I cancelled my debit card and opted to not receive another one. I pay online with my credit card, which I now use as a charge card and pay off once a month. Its a good way to track your expenses anyway and get cash back rewards. Also, I don't give my checking account information online either or pay by echeck.
