Need help with mounting new scope

I had $500 worth of gift cards to Cabelas after Christmas. So I bought a Leupold VX-R 3-9x40 scope. I am going to put it on my Savage Model 11 .22-250.

I already have the leupold double dovetail bases on the gun.

My question is, what height of rings do I need for the scope. I realize that you want your scope to be as low as possible for accuracy reasons. I was thinking medium height I just didn't know if I should go with high rings because of the bull barrel. Any advice would be great.

Go online and find the rings u want and go by the online chart that will clear Ur scope with tight clearance

Mediums will work good! Take it to academy and have them mount it for you.......

^^^^^this ...... however you will probably have to ask for rings by name, model#,height, and inner circumference ...they took them off the shelf due to being part of.innocent.guns that randomly go off on there own and hurt people.

Depends on the stock, bolt throw and the scope objective. You can't just say without seeing it. Some stocks have a raised comb and others are straight. This will greatly affect your cheek weld and your view through the scope. Also, bolt clearance is another issue you have to consider.

I have some guns where lower is better, and some that want a higher mount because of the bolt throw and raised cheek piece on the stock.

Making sure the scope is at the proper height is a very important part of shooting accurately.

Another question, I forgot to mention that the new scope has a 30mm tube. Does that change anything or do I still go with the medium height rings?

I have owned that same scope and really like it and you most likely will to. The DD rings that Leupold makes will give you plenty of room in the Med. height and the 30mm tube should not affect the fit with the 40mm or 50mm objectives that it is made in.

You might check their chart and see if you might even get away with lows on the 40mm but this would be a matter of whether or not you need to be that low in order to achieve a proper cheek weld for the size man you are.

The Leupold and Burris DD rings and bases are personally my favorite way to mount a scope on a sporting rifle. Rock solid and clean lines etc.; but beware of the ring alignment as few other mounting systems can so easily put unwanted tork on the barrel of your new scope.

I sagest that you have your new scope install by someone who has the proper ring alignment and lapping equipment that is if you don't.

On the other hand if you can find a set of discontinued Burris DD Supreme s they come with plastic inserts that are designed to eliminate much of this concern. although proper alignment is still impotent for a tork free set.

Just FYI; according to Burris both Leupold and Burris rings will work with each others basses although I have never had the occasion to try.

                      Good luck and be safe.
