I finally got a buck on the ground. I have been after this particular deer all season with about 15 sits and no sightings. I put the bow away for the first time all year and brought out the 7 mag for fear of the season ending before I got a chance at this buck. After summer and early fall game pictures I knew that this was the buck that I wanted to hunt. I have passed on several great bucks this season looking for this one. I guess I just needed a cold snap, because Saturday afternoon I got in the blind at 3:30 and before getting my camera set up, I looked up and saw him chasing a doe across the plowed oat field at full speed. Before I could get the door shut and gun out the window he was gone. I went ahead and got set up and sure enough about 15 minutes later the doe led him back into my area. I put the camera on him and let the 7 mag eat. Dropped in his tracks at 3:45 pm.
Unfortunately, between his double brow tine and G3 he has broke off about 13-15 inches of scorable points.
My brother in law shot a management 8 point the night before as well as a big doe about 5 minutes after I shot my buck. Great weekend of deer hunting.
New Years Day will be spent making as much jerky as possible. Happy New Year GS.
