    Potty trianing help

My wife and I are attempting to potty train our son. Its very discouraging for her because he is just as stubborn as she is and it seems like he refuses to use the potty. I tried to tell her it is going to take time (we just started this morning), but she is getting discouraged from not knowing what to try.

Any advise on how to get him to use the potty?

Any ideas how to keep mommy from giving up and putting it off again?

Stickers and rewards. Nothing but praise. Takes about 3 days to get him used to the idea.

ha ha. My wife did our oldest son. Not quite there with the youngest yet. How old is your boy? The motivation for your wife would be the next time he takes a big stinky one in his diapers and she has to change it. ha ha. Try putting cheerios in the toilet and tell him to aim at them.

We used to throw a few Cheerios in the potty to give my son something to "aim" at. Might be worth a try...at least to make it more fun.

        ...your mileage may vary.

Easiest way to teach little boys how to #1 -- pee off the porch, pee on a tree, pee on a ...you get the idea--anything outside.

our son didnt really want to do it either. But once he relaized that he was the only one in his day care that wasnt going to the bathroom and doing it like a big boy he came around real quick. This was once instant where peer pressure worked to our advantage.

This is a good post. And the first point they make is very important. Wait until he is ready and have patience. I think a lot of people do it for their own convenience (wrong reason #1) and end up with a struggle.

My little girl was over 2 1/2 and it was fairly easy. She had gotten to the point where she was excited about being a "big girl". She peed in the potty for a pretty good while, but there seemed to be a hurdle with #2. But she knew she had to poop because she would go to a private place to do it. So, we just kept telling here that as soon as she was ready to poop in the potty, she could wear her "big girl" panties and she it worked.

On the other hand we had some friends who forced trained their little girl (complete with humiliating accidents, etc.) And according to my wife, she would cry when she had to go potty, after being potty trained.

Take him out on the back porch and teach him how to aim!

We made a chart. It had three rows with ten squares on each row. We rewarded each potty trip (pee) with candy (M&Ms, small candy). When he filled the tenth square, he got a small toy. On the second row when he filled the tenth, he got a medium toy. On the third, he got a large toy. Now he was more hesitant to poop, so any poop trip was an instant toy. We did this for about 2 weeks and is now potty trained. Patience is key. My wife stays at home and had to wash several pairs of underwear. We bought these training underwear for him too. They have some extra padding in the front in case of an accident. We also used a pull-up during nap and put a night-time pull-up on at night. We're still doing the pull-up thing until he can hold it all night. Hope this helps! Good luck!

She is using MIke & Ikes, since thats what he got from Santa. Our main problem now is that he doesnt seem to mind sitting in his own mess, so it makes it hard to get him to the potty on time, much less try to get him to aim.

Does it sound like hes not ready? Im not sure what to do. He seems interested in the potty. He will sit on his (with his pants on) and he likes to flush the big potty.
