    Painting a light bulb

I need to add a heat source to my dog house, a 250 watt heat lamp will be too much for that size space, so I was going to go with a 125 or 150 watt "bub".

Can I spray paint it so it's not producing bright white light? Or will the paint get hot & flake off, or worse catch fire?

    Try foil!

i dont think it will work out well at those temps. place a peice of metal in front of the bulb. the light will hit the metal first and knock some of the glare down. also warms the metal up so keep that in mind.

Get an incandescent bulb , the spot light version( for outdoor use) they get hot enough . Do not get a c.f.l (energy savers) they will not get hot enough .

If you just want to darken it use a marker.

A 100w incandescent will put off enough heat to keep the pooch warm. Painting the bulb will cause it to overheat and fail prematurely.

This was my 2nd option, & really figured it was a better option, but allowing a little light would help heat the box overall.

In our dog houses we used to mount a lightbulb inside a metal coffee can or paint bucket. Keeps it fairly dark and the metal will radiate some heat

Dog will sleep just fine with the light on! I use a 60 watt soft white standard type bulb and dogs are cozy but not toasty...

Been doing it for over 50 years.
Take a church key and punch a few holes around the closed end of the can.
