One stupid thing leads to another....

I can't believe I'm even going to tell y'all I did this, but here goes.

Last week I was about to leave for a business trip to Austin, when I remembered it was time to change the oil in my truck. I have 230,000 miles on my truck, so I always use Mobile 1 synthetic. I went to Walmart and bought everything I need and as soon as I got home and ready to work, it started raining. I was in my dress clothes and should have left for Austin an hour ago already, but decided to proceed with the oil change. I drained the pan, filled the truck with oil, and replaced the filter. I noticed there wasnt near as much oil in the pan as usual, and told my wife I think my truck is burning oil. Oh well, I kissed her and the kids goodbye and left for Austin.
I didn't make it very far when I realized my truck was acting a little strange. It was idling funny and felt awkward when I would start going after being stopped. I made it a few miles and stopped at a friend's house to check it out.

In my hurry, my stupid self drained the transmission instead of the oil! Then I added twice the oil! Ugh! So now I had to do two synthetic oil changes, and found out that there is no easy way to pour the transmission fluid in. It has to be pumped in from under the truck. Then you have to heat the truck up to 140 degrees and then pump in even more!

So I finally leave for Austin 4 hours later and the truck ran fine! A few days later I had to slam on my breaks, and when I gave it gas the transmission slipped before going into gear. It then wouldn't shift passed 3rd gear, and I had to limp to the shop. Luckily the shop owner was just leaving for the day and I was able to leave my truck and keys with him.

I got a call from him the next day to tell me that someone had broken into my truck that night! Dang! Stole my binoculars, mag light and 2 sets of tools. The binos and light were from my wife's grandpa who died last month! She is so mad at me right now for leaving them in the truck.

I guess the only good thing is they left my $250 GPS and my $150 bow light! They were in the ammo can under the binoculars they stole.

Lesson learned! The oil pan looks exactly like the transmission pan! Drain the one in the front .

Y'all don't laugh at me too hard.

I did this on my first oil change as a teenager, only I didn't realize what had happened until it was too late. Sometimes it seems like I do more harm than good when I get in a hurry and make stupid mistakes.

You just got a really bad turn of events, Sorry Brother!

I'm going to take a guess and say you're driving a Toyota? Perhaps a Tacoma?

Its times like that when i wonder why I don't just pay someone to do it. I spent a good hour trying to get my oil filter off the last time. It's in a awkward spot. I was to the point of hammering a screw driver into it. Oil filter was destroyed by the time i got it off. No clue why it was so tight because i had only tightened it by hand.

Can you not add the transmission fluid through the transmission dipstick tube?

                    Sorry for your bad luck!!!

There is no transmission dipstick tube on the Tacoma. I had to get a pump from a mechanic and pump it in from the bottom of the pan. It was really messy!

Don't feel bad. I have heard of this happening to at least 2 other people. And they were engineers. I know one was a toyota, but not sure about the other.

How do you know when it is full? Or overfull?

A drain plug but no fill plug? WTH....hmmmm would call that a engineering screw up!!!
