SLR uses film, and DSLR is digital, using a memory storage device(usually SD card). Leg dog, snake lover, at the wall, cottonwood, Hillary, Mary Michael, Casey and some others are really good with theirs. Hopefully they will chime in and answer more specific questions for you.
BTW someone had a D80 in the classifieds recently. That is a very good Nikon camera body.

Canon = more user friendly in the start to mid range. (this is my personal opinion... over the years I have found it's just easier for a novice to pick up a canon with good results... the Nikon is less forgiving and you need the right settings to get "the good stuff")
I feel there is no discernable difference once you get to the high end.
If she has her eye on a Nikon, I'd try and start her with a Nikon D5200 which was just released in November.

The Canon Powershot series has a new super zoom that is great . Canon Sx50HS. They take excellant photos, has a huge 45X zoom , and is easy to use. The video is comparable to our HD video camera. Easy to find for less than $450.00.
