    Hunting in Oklahoma

I would like any feedback or experience from anyone that has hunted oklahoma. There seems to be some big deer coming out of the southeastern area. What is deer density? turkey etc. I hear alot of comments about poaching and vandals in oklahoma, is that as prevalent as the comments seem. Are hunters starting to turn towards management or is it shoot the 1st thing that shows up. Land prices seem to be cheap compared to Texas. thanks

I do know that you can't beat Texas game laws and limits... that is the reason a lot of people stay home...

That being said... I would love to look at buying a place in Sonora for mulies or Iowa/Illinois for deer...

I hunt in sw oklahoma. we don't have the deer #s but we have some big deer. I have killed 4 120 plus bucks in 8 years of hard hunting. You only get two bucks a year. Bow for bucks in oct 1 to jan 1. deer in my avatar was taken if ok, also the one in my profile. Most Ok bucks are bigger bodied than texas bucks and will weigh over 200lbs. Not as many big ranches in ok and poaching can be a problem. Managment has changed alot over the last 5 years. deer hunting is still new to ok. I saw my first deer when I was 16 around our land. I am now 32 and seems we get more deer every year.

The deer in SW Oklahoma are the result of a transplant program many years ago. The still have some of the genetic traits of the deer around MacAlester where the deer were originally transplanted from.

Not sure on the out of state bag limits but in 17 years of hunting in Oklahoma as a resident, I have yet to kill all the deer I am eligible to.

The vandals and poaching rumors are an attempt to keep outsiders out.

I grew up huniting in SE 0K. The hunting is hard. As said the numbers are not there but there is some big deer, and yes there is a problem with poachers. They have torn up a lot of stuff that my dad has put up. They don't care about your property or your fence lines.

I grew up hunting in the eastern part of the state, lots of creek bottoms and pecan groves and stuff. We didn't usually see a lot and then they were small but every now and then we would see a 130" or 140" deer. I now hunt up in the NW part of the state for rifle season and you probably want to pass on the 130" deer up there, lots of nice ones and you are typically going to see quite a few deer during the day. It never ceases to amaze me the the size of the deer that come out of the McAlester army ammunition depot every year. Its a traditional equipment only draw hunt, but there are some MONSTERS in there.. As far as the SE part of the state goes, I have a buddy that hunts around Antlers (great name for a town) and he's shot two really nice deer the past two years.

I hunted mcalister 2 years ago. I did not get a shot at a big buck but my cousin missed a 170 class buck at 25 yds.

In the south west portion there are Mulies and WT's. I have a good friend that hunts pretty hard in OK and he always gets a nice deer. I have shot a couple of does in OK and have had a blast every time I went. I would still go but trying to fund a TX lease and an OK one gets to be quite much.
