    I hate a thief, but...

Anyone who steals from someone who did all the right things to earn what they have should be put under the jailhouse. Okay, okay, I may be able to give a break to someone who has exhausted every avenue and boosts a bit of food to feed their starving family and other RARE cases. However, really??? This is how we are spending our police officer's time and tax payer's money? Setting up a very irresistible situation for some downtrodden person and then busting them? I think we have a larger problem out there than this.

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — Police have been leaving a cash-filled purse and a bag with a DVD player in unattended shopping carts outside stores in Manchester, N.H.

They have been glad to find that most holiday shoppers do the right thing.

Officers have been running the sting for about a week at shopping centers. So far, Manchester police Lt. Maureen Tessier says, most people notice the bag and purse and take steps to return them.

Just two people have been arrested after taking the items and putting them in their cars.

Under the law, a person who obtains lost or mislaid property must try to return it.

Asked if officers were surprised that most people have been honest, Tessier said: "I think we should all have that expectation that everyone's going to do the right thing."

Looks like NH cops have been watching too many episodes of "Bait Car". Next thing you know there will be a show called "Bait Shopping Cart"...They need to go out and look for real bad guys. What a waist of taxpayer money.

Look at location. Not real surprising.

I am sure they would be better served spending those hours on drunk drivers, family violence or burglary. Just my humble opinion.

But it is nice to know that most people return it.

This is probably where the money came from that that guy on here found a little while back. He must've snagged it when they weren't looking. Lol

In 1988 my HS football team went to Zetners Daughters steakhouse after a game(we were visiting team). The steakhouse put a small stack of money on the counter beside the cash drawer as a test and sure enough one of the players on my team took it. And man it became a big deal.

Reminds me of watching cops when they do prostitution stings. I'm always wondering with all the officers it looks like are involved in these stings what a waste of time it seems to be, especially when they mention how insignificant the consequences are to the people they bust.

Entrapment. Putting it in your car does not make you guilty. A lawyer will have a field day with this crap.

I was thinking the same thing. I can see some one going to there car, looking for some kind of ID and trying to make contact with the owner. Would not make them a thief. Now if they took the money, tossed the purse and took off that would be something else. Seems they would have bigger fish to fry.

Entrapment is if a law enforcement officer persuades or influences a person to commit an offense that the person would otherwise have been unlikely to commit. No LE officer is persuading then to steal anything, therefor is not entrapment...intentionally, knowingly and willingly taking property from another with the intent to deprive the owner of the property does make you guilty
By not taking the purse into the store and turning it in to "lost and found" or calling the police to report found property in NH will get you arrested, obviously

I agree taht a good lawyer will beat it in court. Who's to say they weren't going to take it to the police station and turn it in? Why did it have to be at the shopping center? If you found a bag of money laying in the middle of hwy 45 at Greenspoint would you take it to the mall and try to return it?
