I was invited to hunt a friend of mines lease located south of King Ranch. We had a blast and shot a couple animals. First we tagged teamed a Nilgai cow. I took out her back legs and he put her down. That was Friday evening. Saturday was slow, saw a bunch of deer and shot a couple pigs but no Nilgai. Then, on Sunday morning we were riding then fence line looking at a buck in the road when out of no where a Nilgai bull pops up in the brush. It spooks and runs to 80 or 90 yards. All I can see is it's neck and head, so I take the shot (free hand). Drop him in his tracks. After dressing him, we get back on the road. We pull around the corner and a 116 6 year old management buck is chasing a doe. The bioligist says, "You can shoot him if you want. He needs to be taken." Well I wasn't going to say no. The buck crosses the road and stops at about 65 yards. I pull the trigger, but nothing happens. GUN JAM!!! All the dust jammed the shell I shot the Nilgai with in the chamber. So the bioligist and I are scrambling. He takes my gun. Goes down the high rack and to his antenna to knock the shell loose. Comes back up the high rack and gives me the gun. By that time I had lost the buck. We back up the Jeep 20 yards and he is standing behind some brush watching us. I took the shot and he too drops where he stood. That was the best hunt I've ever been on. I sure hope he invites me next year......
