Young deer, first year on lease. No reason this deer should be killed.

Very hard to manage a low fenced lease unless you have an abundence of land or like minded neighbors boss

I agree, but ain't gonna happen. To much subjectivity on the part of the hunter. BTW, that's deer is pretty young.

he's young, I wouldn't worry about him very much right now. Get a feel for your new lease, and look at everything altogether.

Some of the best bucks in this state come off of Places without any appreciable antler management. Habitat conditions and maturity have the ability to turn a "cull buck" into the buck of a lifetime.

Now, if you want to cull him because of the economics of providing feed or manage the impact on the habitat that would be another issue. Basic carrying capacity.

            Otherwise, see what happens.

You need one to shoot a young deer coming out of a drought?

Regardless of what he turns out to be, I promise that one deer wont hurt your herd.

That's no cull. There are no culls in AR counties. Culls are only in non AR counties.

What's wrong with that deer. He's just young. I do not think he is a cull.

You can purchase a tag for deer like that. I believe you have to shoot him first and the tag will run you about $500

That deer is 1.5. Under our management plan he would die, but we are under a STRICT plan that we kill anything with 5 points or less at 1.5. All depends on your management plan.

I think the bigger issue is saying you are managing, but have no plan with a definite goal in mind and ways to measure to your success.

any management plan that "culls" 1.5 year old bucks is seriousely flawed.

It's a numbers game when you get as many bucks as we have to shoot each year. So when you start culling the youngsters, why not cull the smaller. Has worked on the place I am on now as well as the place I came off of that killed any 1.5 yo deer that did not have at least 8 pt's.

And yes, we kill all spikes.

The deer is young but I don't agree with the AR restrictions. I know I have some really jacked up deer every year but we can't shoot them legally... or older bucks that will never get outside the ears. But as a whole there are too many people that would kill anything and everything if there were no restrictions. We are looking to jump up to level 3 MLD.

MLD3 will not get you big deer, it will only get you a balance population for your property. It is a great management tool in it allows you to harvest deer early before the use up valuable resources or get a chance to start preading genetics. As for antler restrictions, it works well there where you are allowed to kill deer that you would not be able to under the antler restrictions. Once again, you need to have a plan in place with a means on how you plan on acheiving your goal and metrics on your sucess. This is in addition to your MLD3 plan.
