Please explain how to do a grid search

Was tracking a deer and lost blood after 50 yards, the we think we jumped the deer 2 yards after that. Backed out until the next day. went back and no blood other than what we found the day prior.

Can someone please explain how to do a grid search or the best approach? We walked the area but no new blood spots. the area we hunt is thick with cedar and brush, with lots of big hills.

    Thanks

Most folks say grid search when they are actually just roaming around looking.

Two ways to search instead of looking

Grid- mark off squares and search one square at a time

Line. Mark a line and do as above.

For deer line searching is about the most effective behind a dog.

I like to use a hand held gps in map mode when walking that way as terrain makes you move around stuff you can stay in the area of search you want. We take a section from last know area and start from there. And go out about 2 to 4 hundred yards then come back to were we started then move out again that distance but just slightly changing our compass angle each time going out kinda like working out in a half circle the direction the animal ran.

A handheld GPS with tracking is the best way. Walk in a direction with it on and tracking you, using the last blood as the start point. Then walk in either a square, and keep doubling back when you reach the edge of the square. You can also just walk one direction, take a couple of steps to the left or right, and turn around and walk back. You will need some sort of visual aid if not using a GPS, like a flag at last blood.

Go slow and look very carefully as you do this, paying close attention to the smallest things on the ground, or the tree limbs as you pass them.
