OK, so I love to bow hunt, but have recently also fell in love with hunting with a contender pistol. Mine is 223, but am in the process of getting a 6.8spc. Knowing I can drop turkeys at at least 157 yards with the 223 I figure the 6.8 will be good to around 300max. I have a 25-06 encore that was my main deer rifle, but now I can really get just about as much range out of the pistol (and my 6.8 AR) that I can with the 25-06 so dont really need it. Figure on selling it and using the funds to help buy a good long range gun so I can learn to shoot hogs and eventually deer out a long ways. I am looking for a gun for shots at 400 to 1K yards, no more an most of the time no less as I will have the contender with me for shorter shots. I know I want a 300 win mag and I will put a break on it (most likely the howetzer break so it shoots like a 22) Lefty guns are hard to come by though. I want a heavy barrel and a long enough barrel to get the most from the winny. So far I found Tikka varmint at 24" in a lefty and maybe savage. What else is out there and what will be accurate enough to realistically at least 800 yards without too much custom work? I have a remington 700 270 I would love to just convert, but does anyone know if I can buy an aftermarket barrel and change the bolt face ect for no more than $1K?

As a fellow lefty, I have felt your pain. I found great relief in the Ruger No. 1 rifles. I had a beauty of a stainless 1-B in 300 Win mag. Very nice rifle and very accurate even with just 150gr Corelokts.
Then I discovered that occasionally Ruger throws us lefties some love, and I got a lefty stainless/laminate Hawkeye 30-06. Very very accurate, and I am confident if I took the time to learn the trajectory, I could consistently score a clean kill shot at 600yds with it. Ruger makes a number of Hawkeye calibers for lefties, including 7mag and 300 win mag. Both will get you to 600 and beyond if you do your part.
Also consider this... There is a fairly steady supply of used, but in fantastic condition, lefthanded Weatherby Mark V rifles in 300 Wby on GunBroker. Most are 800-1200,which is not too much over what a new Remington 700 will run you. Absolutely no question that a 180gr @ 3250 will get you as far as you wanna go.

Only problem is I want a "sendero" type gun. I want a heavy barrel, 26" prefered. I want this to be more like a sniper rifle than a carry gun. I will only tote this one from the truck to the box, no more than a few hundred yards. I cannot find hardly anything factory out there that gets me that. I am going to call a guru gunsmith this week and see what I am looking at if I take my 700 and put a shillen or other barrel, open up bolt face ect will cost me. if its a grand or less I am going that route I think

A Shilen barrel short chambered that will still have to be finish reamed, and headspaced, lugs lapped, trued etc runs $483 plus tax and shipping. And that doesn't include the gunsmith works that will be required.
