    Remington guru's

I have a Remington model 721 that I bought used from a gun shop about 8 years ago. I don't know much about them except that they only made them from around '48-'62 ish. I'm looking for a more modern style bolt gun, with a heavy barrel and maybe a brake on it. I had asked earlier last week about a gunsmith to take mine to for barrel work and I got a few replies as to the collector value of it. When I bought it, it had an HS precision stock on it, everything else is stock. My question is, should I go through with modifying the 721 or sell it and buy a 700? Thanks

If there is collector value to the gun I would not modify it. However if it has sentimental value to you, do as you please.

721 is the predecessor to the 700. With the original stock gone, it's not original and there are a few of them out there so not a huge collector gun. What exactly are you wanting to get to?

I'm not a wannabe sniper or anything, but I moved my rifle stand to a spot where I could have a 4-500 yard shot. I would like a rife that I could have the most precision out of without breaking my pockets, that's why I mentioned getting a smith to put a new heavy barrel on it, and some trigger work. I have no sentimental value to it. I'm just wondering if I should modify this one or sell it and buy a 700.

What you have is not a collector piece. I don't see any reason not to build off of it

By the time you spend all the money on rebarrelling your rifle you could get a new or used sendero depending on the caliber of choice or a 5r Remington (308 or 300win mag) and have two rifles. Remington 700 is hard to beat for out of the box accuracy.

Savage rifles are most accurate out of the box, come with heavy barrels in a variety of calibers, and have a great trigger (Accu-trigger). However, they aren't the most handsome of rifles IMO.

if you modify and sink $$$ into it, you still only have a 721 that is not worth much money on the resale market

sell the 721 for $450 and invest that money into a more modern 700 and go from there
