    Gun question

]I will be buying another .308 rifle soon and have it narrowed down to a Savage model 10 FCP Police model with HS stock,Accutrigger and 24" heavy barrel or a Remington 700P Police model with HS stock and 26" heavy barrel.I have had a 26" before and did not really like it in a small stand. Both should be the same or close in accuracy.Savage has a detachable mag and the rem. is internal feed.I am leaning toward the Savage right now.Anyone else have an opinion?

Remington 700 would be my opinion. I dont know much about the savage so I cant say anything about it but I wouldnt give up my 700 for anything else. If it aint broke dont fix it... I started with the 700 Ill finish with it.

Id go remington 700. Should be a pretty good shooter. I have a remington adl .308 and it shoots one inch groups at 100 all day. If you want a real shooter that will go sub 1 inch with almost any factory ammo, Id be looking at a tikka with the heavy barrel in .308. My buddy just sold one bc he was offered more than he could pass up and it shot 1.75 inch groups at 800 yrds. At 100 it stacked em in the same hole. He does his own loads which helps. But it will shoot no more than 1 in with factory ammo. If I remember right, they wont break the bank either. My 270 is a tikka t3 lite and shoots 3/4 inch at 100 with factory loads.

Just did that and I don't like it.I lost alot of velocity and can't get it back.I was shooting Rem. core loct at 2820 fps.1 1/2" high at 100 yds and dead on at 200 yds. After cutting it shoots 1 1/2" high at 100 and 3-4" low at 200yds.Now I am shooting Hornady superperformace at 3000 fps and it does the same thing. Can't burn all the powder in a 20 " barrel. That's the reason I am giong back to a longer barrel.

I have a Savage model 10 precision carbine & I will tell you it is a very accurate rifle. I hand load for it and a buddy of mine. He has a 700VTR and I have worked up several loads for his gun. It's not nearly as accurate as mine is. That is with me doing the shooting on both rifles. I also own a Savage model 12FV in 22-250 and its a tack driver at 250yds. I have taken a doe out to 637yds with it. Savage just flat out shoots. If you want accuracy. It's also a Ford,Dodge & Chevy arguement. I own a few 700's they can also be great shooters.

Sorry bro but you didn't lose that much velocity in a .308. I'd say you have other issues with the gun. A .308 will burn nearly all it's powder in a 16" barrel.

Just got a Remington 700 AAC 20" threaded 308. Great gun cuts holes with 168 Barnes tipped triple shock. My neighbor has one as well and shoots the same factory Barnes load. Remington is hard to beat. Rifles purchased at R&M in El Campo Tx.

You lose 15-35 or so fps for each inch the barrel was shortened.I lost 6" of barrel. It definitely does not shoot as flat now.I have shot it for the last 4 years and I can really tell the difference.Back to the original question Remington or Savage.

My vote is the Remington, but I wouldn't pay the price for the police model.

If you're interested in the 700 Police, might I suggest another option? I'm not sure what the price on the 700P is, but you can get the same action and 26" tube in a different stock for $450 from Dicks Sporting Goods. They call it the 700 Varmint, but it's basically the 700 SPS varmint without the hinged floorplate. You can then, if you so choose, buy whatever stock you want, and sell the original for around 50 bucks or so. If you want hinged floorplate, they can be had from gunbroker, amazon, ebay etc for about 25 bucks, but you'll have to have a stock to put it in, or you could just spend about 100 more, get the same rifle with the floorplate (SPS version), and just swap stocks if you want something better. If you like the HS Precision stock that comes on the 700P, it's cheaper to just buy that vs. buying a rifle and swapping stocks, but if there's something you'd rather have instead of the HS, why pay for the HS, only to pull it and sell it?

Honestly, I have the 700 Varmint from Dicks, and it's a real shooter, even in the factory furniture. The only thing I have swapped out on it is the trigger, because IMO the X-mark is junk. With Hornady TAP 168gr (that's an A-max bullet I believe) it will litterally make a single hole so small that I have trouble deciding if the second, third, fourth etc bullets are even hitting paper. It will also do very similar with my handloads using Sierra Gamekings. I really want to put it in a better stock, and already have the one I want picked out and the bottom metal in my gun cabinet waiting, but it already shoots so good, I'm afraid to mess with it. It's not like I'm going to get any improvement, other than ergonomic feel.

My nephew has the savage you mentioned, and it shoots really well too, but not on par with mine. He shoots a lot (working at the gun range allows him to do this a lot cheaper than the rest of us with free range time and deeply discounted factory ammo) and can't compete with my groups, even when I gave him some of my expensive ammo. I've tried shooting his rifle, (BTW, I'm not a fan of the accutrigger either) and it's not bad, but I can't get it to group like mine. Also, to me, the Savage just feels clunky and it's UGLY as sin due to the tail of the bolt with no tailpiece like on most rifles, but that's purely subjective.
