So let me first say that my girlfriend was really OK with me going hunting on her birthday, and all worked out well!
Opening morning finds me in the back of our lease near the national forrest. As I top a steep hill on the side of a big canyon, I glass a buck and doe about 600 yards away from me on a ridge. I drop out of site and work my way to the next hill. I peer over the top to see the buck and doe still standing in the same spot, 260 yards away. I freeze as the doe is looking in my direction. I wait for nearly 1.5 hours not moving afraid I would spook the doe. Finally she shifts he gaze slightly away from me and I back down the hill I had climbed. I decided to roll the dice and try to loop around and get on the same ridge the buck and doe was on. As I start to top the ridge 30 minutes later, my heart is pounding like crazy. My eyes are going crazy searching for this buck, but he is no where to be found. As I start my right to left look again, my eyes pick up on something in the cedar in front of me. Horns stick out over the cedar as the buck is standing 80 yards away staring at me. I freak out, as I know its a matter of seconds before the buck bolts. I find a hole in the cedar where I have a clear shot and send on off handed 280 bullet on its way. I knew as soon as I pulled the trigger that I missed. The buck breaks in a full run, followed shortly behind him is me! By the time I get to the edge where he went over, he is already half way up the next ridge. I sat down and tried to settle my crosshairs on the buck. I was breathing so hard, I knew hitting this deer would be nothing short of a miracle. The buck finally stopped, as I fired another round. The buck folded up right where he stood. I thanked the good lord for the opportunity, and headed over to see him. I was impressed to say the least! Thanks for reading, I know it was a long one!
