Are you wanting to be able to change out lenses (DSLR) or are you looking for a point and shoot (P&S)?

If a DSLR is in order, I would look at a Canon EOS or Nikon...

Does your wife know you refer to her as "wide"?

Point and shoot has a fixed lens and is mostly used in program mode or full auto that lets the camera choose settings.

DSLR (digital single lens reflex) is a body that can take a different lens. Some entry level models have modes to choose from or can choose your own settings. More expensive and good glass is expensive. Kits are not that bad that include entry level glass. Just takes some reading and experimenting.

I have been looking at the new Canon SX50 HS to play with. You might want to read the reviews on it. It is currently a little north 0f $400 The model it replaced, the SX40 HS can be bought for under $400

A whole host of other cameras out there also. I still have and use a Panasonic FZ20 that has taken a ton of pictures and still going.

I use a Canon 7D and older 30D DSLR with a 400mm lens for birds and other wildlife.

Canon or Nikon digital SLR are the way to go. Both make models in your price range. But plan to pony up some serious money for a long range lense for any good camera. This time of year many retailers run package deals on them. I got my canon rebel 8 several years ago this exact time of year for $600 and it came with about another $600 in accessories and lenses cuz a new model just came out.

If you have a sams close go check and see if Rey have Skme black Friday camera bundles left. They had the canon T3i bundle on sale. 499.99 for the whole bundle.

A lot of the new point and shoot cameras take fairly decent pictures. I don't have one, but there are times when I wish I had something light and easy to slip into a pocket, vs the monsters that I carry around with me everywhere. How serious about photography is your wife?
