How bad is your coon problem?

This is Val Verde county. I'm going for 3 or 4 days in December. Other than my daughter shooting a cull, I'm not even planning to deer hunt. Got a wicked bright light mounted on my .22 and I plan to nap in the day time and wage war at night. This is 1 of 3 feeders the family is hunting. (I also plan to install some PVC coon guards on the feeder legs)

I purchased a dog proof trap, and already got several coons and seems to keep the others at bay. I set it about ten yards from the feeder , does not bother the deer either. You can see him in the back left under the cedar tree.

PVC coon guards? How do those work?

I heard they don't work very well, but it's a clever idea.

I had a similar coon problem, probably worse. I don't care if they eat some corn, my problem was them hanging off the spinner and kiiling a whole drum of corn in like 3 nights.

My first attempt of building a "cage" completely failed, the coons just ripped right through it.

I bought one of the spintech (or whatever they're called) motors for about $80 (I think lol). It works perfectly. Was not exactly "plug and play" like the guy told me on the phone. Had to build an adapter plate out of sheet metal, but well worth the effort. I've read that a few people have had coons get through these, but they haven't on mine yet. Not sure how they could unless they are mutants and have arnold biceps..

The theory is you put a pvc sleeve on the feeder leg that hangs by a small cable that lets the sleeve spin. Coon tries to crawl up but the sleeve spins and he falls. Got a friend who uses them with good success.

I'm sure it's better than the axle grease my FIL put on the legs last year. What a mess

Yep. Look at the time stamp on my pics. This was Sept/Oct so feeder was spinning at 7:00pm and the deer would quickly clean it up. Dang coons are doing teamwork - one busted in the cage and spinning corn all night long for the others! I have a progression of pics showing how they worked the cage loose over about 4 days.

Not anymore but I had a pretty good one before moonpies and coon cages put a dent in them.....

I use those live traps, 18 cent canned cat food. And a 22 pistol. Helps keep them down. Good luck.
